I just finished reading Everett True's bio of Nirvana. Now, the main reason I wanted to get into this book and not any other POS bio about Nirvana, was because Everett True, writer for Melody Maker, was close to Cobain. See: Wheel chair pusher who led Cobain on the Reading Festival stage. He can be blamed by introducing Cuntney Love and Cobain together.
ANYHOW, (sorry, Im buzzed and its late), It makes more than enough quotes on how Pearl Jam was dissed by Cobain and co, saying how Pearl Jam was garbage and trying to copy Nirvana. Eventually, Cobain came to not really hate Eddie, it was more of like a sibling rivalry IMHO.
Ive read about this riff and I just don't get it. PJ has never tried to sound like anybody, especially their peers. Come on. I'd like to hear from yall on what you think about those early quotes from Nirvana. Do some of you believe PJ was trying to copy Nirvana. I just never in a million years saw that. But if you do, please feel free to enlighten a buzzed bro.

The British press, especialy Melody Maker, NME etc are always preocupied with trying to appear cool and were very keen to kiss Kurt's ass. As a band everything about Pearl Jam is way different from Nirvana and all they really have in common is coming from the same town at the same time.

I think Kurt was a fan of hardcore and punk and saw Pearl Jam as douchebag alpha-male chest-banging cock-rockery, which, during the Ten period, I suppose they sort of were.
I know there was something else about seeing Jeff and Stone as careerist after Green River split up, but I'm not sure.

it seemed at the time that Kurt felt Pearl jam lacked ìndie cred. A funny notion to me because I found Nevermind far more accessible and hooky than Ten. I do remember some journalists trying to weave a thread between Art-Prog rock and Pearl Jam so maybe it had something with that. In the end it was all `Overblown.`

I was also under the impression that Kurt had most of his beef with Jeff and Stone because of their post-Green River activity.
In an interview with Biggie Smalls after Tupac was killed, Biggie had asked Pac why all the drama and allegedly Tupac said "I'm just trying to make this money." I think some of Kurt's comments were in similar vain. Get people to choose sides, get more people interested in the music- it's really a shame.
In the end, I think Nirvana ended up being more what Kurt claimed to hate than PJ...all the way to his suicide.

I don't think it is appropriate to lump all three members of Nirvana together on the issue.
Dave Grohl was on very good terms with the band in the mid 1990s, even guesting on drums during a few Australia shows in March 1995.
Krist Novaselic was also part of Pearl Jam's first MonkeyWrench radio broadcast in January 1995, obviously friends with the band at that point.
It really comes down to a few snide remarks by Cobain in the very early days, and Eddie has repeatedly explained that he and Cobain moved past their little squabble while Cobain was still alive.

Cobain didn't like Pearl Jam's music but the media turned into a personal matter as in Cobain hated Vedder and i think Cobain kinda went along with it for a short while. Vedder certainly valued Cobain's opinion for some reason.

There is a strange story about Kurt and Ed dancing to Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" at one of the MTV Video Awards.
Can you even imagine a MTV Award show featuring Eric Clapton!?! Those were certainly the days.
