So, I'm on the message board of former Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Ed King ( he's the one that wrote Sweet Home Alabama and one hell of a guitar player) and someone asks him what the best cover he's ever seen/ heard. And here's his answer:

Ed King wrote:
Pearl Jam doing the Who song THE REAL ME last year (VH1's "Rock Honors" in 2008). THAT was the best cover I've ever heard...it had it ALL. That is the ultimate tribute to a band. It's perfect.

As a big Skynyrd fan*, this made me smile real big.

* They were my band before PJ. Still in my top three.

it's a fact that PJ nailed it in a glorious way (LROM was just as good, if not better).

I'd say The Real Me was the better cover for that performance considering Jeff's bass work, the energy of the playing, and just the simple fact that no one had ever heard them perform it.

agreed on that - i just happen to think that LROM is a better song.

While we're on the topic of The Who, does anyone have a recommendation of a first album of theirs I can get to get into them?
