(If there's already a thread for this that my search didn't turn up, feel free to merge)
So, the initial previews left me feeling rather ambivalent about the film. But, everything I've read/seen on it so far has been complete praise. So I'm not really sure what to think.
But I will see this, and in 3-D. Can't pass that up.
There's a scene in a preview with the old guy in one of those stairchair things like in Gremlins. I really do hope someopne or something gets launched out of it.

It breaks my heart to know that I could've been working for Pixar instead of toiling on shiftwork for an airline like I am now.
I had a communications teacher in my Senior year at High School who had connections at Disney, and was pushing me hard. I made her a claymation movie and had drawings for a portfolio, and was walking me through the application process for the animation program. But my parents insisted I go to University instead, because a Bachelor's degree was more respectable.
On a more positive note, I need to see this movie.

You may not realize this, but you probably made the right choice. Animation is a cruel, cut-throat, low paying and highly unstable profession. You have to absolutely love what you do with every fibre of your being otherwise there is no way you could tolerate the long hours, minimum wages, and virtual slave labour you are forced to work in order to simply afford your rent. I went the animation route and couldn't deal with that kind of lifestyle. You have to constantly move to find the work, you're forced to essentially beg for scraps of work and your relationships suffer because of it. I have friends who are still in the industry and they are just scraping by...at least here in Canada. I'm sure Pixar pays a little better if you can get in there.
Choosing a career in animation is akin to choosing a career in music. Very few people make a decent living at it.

Pixar is a great studio but a totally disagree with the notion that they are making the best films out there right now. I've read several reviews that say this sort of thing and it's simply not true. Best animated films though, without question.

Wow, thanks for that. I have a friend who went a similar route to yours - realized that he was busting his ass and squandering his talent. He decided to be his own man and is now working for an ad firm in Toronto. He's always said that if you have the talent, it's best to not whore it. Keep it to yourself or be fairly compensated for it.

Not to threadjack, but who has a better record over the last 10 years?

What I mean is that while their movies are high quality and are pretty artful (especially WALL-E), they still aren't as good as the best films in any given year, at least IMO. Wall-E is their best and it still wasn't the best movie that year.
Honestly (and I know I'm in the minority), I am waiting for Pixar to make a film aimed at adults. With the talent they have I think they could make some truly mindblowing stuff. But they'll probably never do it.

I somewhat agree with you, but I also think that Pixar is the most consistent effective story-telling studio in existence. Yes, they're family-friendly and universal in terms of themes, but their command of narrative and story through characters, characters that are as real as any actor or actress gracing the screen, is nothing short of amazing.
