What is Jeff's finest moment not as a songwriter but as a bass player? I was looking for some good/challenging songs to learn

Sometimes Dead man Oceans
The job of a great bass player though is for you not to notice him..Danny Federici was a good example of this. Solid as a rock but you'd hardly notice his playing. Subtle yet powerful. Jeff has this in spades.

Real Me for sure! This thinking about bass players is something that has limited Pearl Jam. The prominence of the bass in Widespread Panic's music really opens up their "Rock" to go many different places. See: Pigeons.
Jeff: Dirty Frank Hail, Hail Help Help MITS Army Reserve Rats Present Tense Even Flow (i've heard bass players talk about enjoying playing this one.) The list can go on and on
I've learnt a few of his baselines - I think the following are some of my favourites (either interesting or fun to play).
In Hiding Tremor Christ Breath Army Reserve Get Right Faithful Hail Hail (although mostly based on stone's riff there are some nice fills on this - esp live) Not For U is easy but the bridge bit is nice Rats - easy riff but fun to play W.M.A - repititive but a nice simple groove Black - this is a really nice baseline that doesn't overpower the song but adds some interest

For me isTremor Christ. Black and Breath has a James Jamerson thing going on. Last Exist he digs up more than usual also, what reminds me about a funny thing about Jeff. He usually stands more on the punkish songs, I guess he feels more comfortable to play more when the guitars are simple and leave a lot of space.

Yes! They said they wrote that one in about 30 minutes during the New Orleans recording session. Amazing. I wonder how much of the song was based on Jeff's part.

He might be more at ease on punk songs, but I always thought his best album was Yield. He does a great job of playing around, adding melodies and interesting counter parts without them being too tricky. Things like Faithful, No Way (the bridge) Pilate, In Hiding, All Those Yesterdays.
