aaaand the show would not have made it past season 1....i'm unaware of paul's acting abilities, but it seems the combination of him and jerry would have been nothing but cringe-inducing....
'The Late Show's' Paul Shaffer Was Almost 'Seinfeld's' George Costanza
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Fans of NBC's "Seinfeld" might find it impossible to imagine anyone other than Jason Alexander playing Jerry's neurotic wingman George - but the role almost went to a late night talk show bandleader. ADVERTISEMENT
According to The New York Daily News, "The Late Show's" Paul Shaffer claims he was first offered the role and was reportedly handpicked by Jerry Seinfeld himself.
"There's no audition ... You've got the part. Just call us back!" Paul wrote in his new book, "We'll Be Here for the Rest of Our Lives," recalling a call he received from the comic.
But Seinfeld's call went unanswered. Paul said he never returned the call about accepting the role because he was too busy -- and yada yada yada, the role eventually went to Alexander.
Paul's book will be hitting the shelves on October 13.

i cant imagine anyone other than jason alexander in this role. though it would be neat to see a parallel universe where this happened. i bet its not as good as this one.

I think Larry David would have been alright.
Larry David's personality works for the character, but if he had done the actual acting, you would've had two tall neurotic characters with George and Kramer and it might not've been as funny. Jason Alexander was the perfect casting: The slow-witted, stocky, bald man.

yeah larry david is great as larry david, but he's really not an actor with any range and would not have been able to make george a good character in that show.
