Soon Forget

Sorry is the fool who trades his soul for a corvette.
Thinks he'll get the girl he'll only get the mechanic.
What's missing? He's living a day he'll soon forget.

That's one more time around. The sun is going down.
The moon is out but he's drunk and shouting.
Putting people down. He's pissing. He's living a day he'll soon forget.

Counts his money every morning. The only thing that keeps him horny.
Locked in a giant house that's alarming.
The townsfolk they all laugh.

Sorry is the fool who trades his love for hi-rise rent.
Seem the more you make equals the loneliness you get.
And it's fitting. He's barely living a day he'll soon forget.

That's one more time around and there is not a sound.
He's lying dead clutching Benjamins. Never put the money down.
He's stiffening. We're all whistling a man we'll soon forget.

Soon Forget was a nice dea, imperfectly realized. Given the choice I’d rather listen to Bugs, but both songs are trying to accomplish something similar. They’re each cautionary tales about greed and surrendering to the expectations of others, although Soon Forget is judging someone who had already made that surrender while Bugs is about that sense of claustrophobic, inevitable certainty that comes shortly before you surrender. Both feature (exclusively) unconventional instruments for a rock record although why Bugs is jarring and abrasive Soon Forget is gentle and soothing—the kind of song you can see bring played around a campfire or on the beach late at night. It reminds you that all you need to have a good time is music, warmth, and friends—that in the end the things that really matter are free

Lyrically Soon Forget is hit or miss. It’s a little bit too self-righteous and judgmental for my tastes (some people do this kind of direct critique very well but Eddie is not one of them) and while there are some decent lyrics here and there, nothing is truly great and there are also some cringe worthy moments too (horny/benjamins come to mind). The vocal melody is catchy, but the substance behind it isn’t enough to draw me in. Vocally Eddie conveys exactly what he wants to here, but I think that casual feeling he brings to his studio uke tracks (see also goodbye) while clearly very authentic, are a bit too laid back. He’s going for intimacy, but there is almost too much familiarity there—sort of like he doesn’t even have to try. It’s like singing to yourself in the car. Parting Ways is also meant to be intimate, but far more effective.

I think this would have worked better as a b-side. Binaural does a great job ratcheting up the tension at the end of that record, and going from Rival to sleight of hand to Parting Ways makes for a fairly intense end to the record. Soon Forget derails that for me. If the band wanted a song to bridge the gap between the jarring SoH and the melancholy Parting Ways Fatal would have played that role much better, and is a superior song to boot.
In the end Soon Forget is a 2 star song for me.

This song is one of the best placed on any album. It fits absolutely perfect! And I love it. 4 stars, definitely.

I used to think this should have been a hidden track after Parting Ways, but now I can't picture it anywhere else other than in between Sleight Of Hand and Parting Ways. It's a shame they left Fatal off because I've often felt that it would have made a great trio with Sleight Of Hand and Soon Forget.

4 stars. I don't know why I love this song so much but I do.

Big fat zero.

Lyrics are cringe worthy.

3-4 stars. I really like it for some reason. Couple good lines, couple terrible ones.

5 stars.

The song is brilliant.

That doesn't mean I listen to it regularly or even much like it's placement on the album (it could have been a secret song), but the point of the song is a form of comedy, of hearing serious "Eddie Vedder" be light and sing "benjamins" or "horny" even while still maintaining a moral sentiment. And it's funny as hell. Same Ed who lacklusterly performed Grievance on Letterman for the same album.

Ed loved playing this song during the 2000 tour encores and the fans reactions perpetuated it. They liked seeing him with a Uke.

The band put this song on the album over songs like Sad, Fatal, and the Other Side. Those songs are no doubt better, but the decision reflects where their values are/were with what they authorize.

I think the decision simply meant that Eddie Vedder is the boss of the band and he wanted his little song on the album. Its a solo Eddie Vedder track for Godsakes. I don't think the "band" had anything to do with it.

When you break it down, the song is simply the music from the Who's "Blue Red and Grey" set to different lyrics. I *like* Eddie's actual cover of Blue Red and Grey but I was never able to force myself to like Soon Forget, even though I tried to pretend I did at the begining. By the end of the tour I just got flat out sick of them wasting valuable encore time on that song every single night.

An Eddie wank song and, given that it's on the album whilst so many other decent tunes from the Binaural sessions aren't, is criminal. 2 stars.

:)

Honestly, I'm amazed anyone can give this one 4/5 stars in comparison with other PJ songs. Tis a flippant ukelele b-side at best.

I don't think it was like that at all. I read an interview where Stone raved about this song and said that they agreed it had to go on the album after Ed played it for the band.

A less spineless producer would have said: "Guys, you're leaving out Fatal, Sad and In the Moonlight, yet you're wanting to include this?! Christ, even Ament's aural rapefest about the basketball player is better than this shit!"
