This one deserves a thread too, since it is allegedly on the new record and a live version of it is circulating (from last year's solo tour)
I've only heard this one once so far but I liked it--not as immediately striking as the fixer or the end but still pretty good and clearly has a lot of promise. It has a fast, upbeat positive energy and a nice vocal melody. Definitley seems to have that into the wild influence since it reminded me immediatley of far behind.
Clearly you can't judge a full band song from one solo performance but I'm really looking forward to this one as well. 4/4 on the 4 live songs we've gotten to hear thus far

I haven't really listened to the lyrics yet but the last line really jumped out at me
'dream the dreams of other men and you'll be no one's rival'
I took it to be that if you don't take chances/strike your own path there won't be enough unique about yourself to be worth of other people's notice. But I'd have to really hear it in the context of the entire song to be sure.

"...a psychoanalytic term that refers to the knowledge of life a child absorbs as it grows that is never consciously given, nor knowingly received. It’s the knowledge children have about whether or not their parents are happy, or about how monsters live under beds, or that sun, sea and sand feel good (but sunscreen does not), or that certain activities will make your mother mad if she happens to discover them. None of it can be put into words, and yet it dictates the unconscious pattern of our lives."
I hope the band was able to musically enhance what Eddie came up with. To be honest, when he played it last year, it seemed like a throwaway track, just a little bit of spontaneity he was sharing at a few of the shows. To see that it made the album is surprising to me. It seems kind of ordinary, although it does have a great melody in the bridge where it sounds like he's singing "Nothing left, nothing left." It'll be interesting to hear how they ended up arranging it, whether it was left as an acoustic rock song, or if they gave it some aggression.

from that german magazine
Unthought Known: First very climatic, then a passionate mid-tempo rock song. A slightly blurry ending but still more palpable than anything off the last album.

I've only heard the song once, but I took that line to be about empathy. Along the lines of "you can't hate another man if you've walked in his shoes."
Really affecting dynamics and vocal energy on these recent songs.
All the thoughts you'll never see you're always thinking brain is wide, brain is deep oh are you sinking feel the path of every day oh which road you're taking breathing hard and making hay yeah this is living look for luck in evidence that you're worth keeping ???swallowing hope/swallow it whole??? in negatives oh so sad and sickening feel the air up above, oh cool/pool of blue sky feel the air up above, oh black with starlight feel the sky blink at/blanket you (other version: blank as you) with gems and rhinestones see the path cut by the moon for you to walk on for you to walk on
nothing left x 12
see the path cut by the moon for you to walk on see the waves on distance shores awaiting your arrival a distant time a distant place (other version: a distant space) that's where we're living a distant time a distant place (other version: a distant space) so what you giving so what you giving dream the dreams of other men and you'll be no one's rival dream the dreams of others then you'll be no one's rival/rifle you'll be no one's rival

that could work too. It's a striking line. He's very good at that.

"Christopher Bollas first coined this provocative phrase in 1987. Basically it refers to what we "know" but for a variety of reasons may not be able to think about, have "forgotten," "act out," or have an "intuitive sense for" but cannot yet put into words."
I'm not pretending I'm smart enough to understand all that, but its interesting to read anyway.
This is how Eddie introduced it last year when he played it:
"Its about the thoughts in the brain that don't always get to get out. By the time they get out, they go through filters and its hard sometimes to get out exactly what you're thinking. See its happening to me right now." - 08.16.08, Washington, DC

i love it. even though this version's the acoustic one, its very upbeat. i know that its prob not the finished article, the same as "the end", but there doesnt seem to be any chorus' in them 2 songs...

Pearl Jam's music has been short on chorus' for some time now....
Please pardon my excitement, but I'm having a really potent emotional response to this song. Pearl Jam hasn't hit me like this since I was 11 listening to Given to Fly on repeat and looking for hidden triangles. I don't usually review songs, but I'm going to give this one a shot:
The old Ed, from Ten through S/T, boomed into the mic, sprinted across the stage, took on the world, rebelled against his own fame, railed against the political structure and then tried to recapture his youth.
This song represents the strongest aspects of the new Ed. He's not actually "new," of course, but I think what we're hearing is Ed accepting and growing into his current self.
His voice has weakened, but instead of trying to growl it back into form, he's embracing its rawness and its vulnerability, as he did on ITW. He's still energetic and rebellious, but now it's not about volume so much as passion. The emotional force is still there, but now it's subtle -- and richer because of it.
Listen as he belts out the lines: "Feel the sky blanket you, with gems and rhinestones; feel the path cut by the moon, for you to walk on." Ten years ago, his voice would smash through those notes, no problem. Now there's faltering. But that's what makes it fit, that's what makes it beautiful.
Ed's strongest constant is his sincerity, and that shines through in the melody and the lyrics of Unthought Known. There are no pretensions, no agendas, only an honest singer sharing his humanity with us.

Thanks again, Mr. Vedder.
Couldnt have said it any better. Thats exactly what vedders voice represents for me nowadays too.
