In 1995:
On June 25th Pearl Jam abruptly cancelled the rest of their 15 date, 11 city summer tour following the previous Saturday's concert at the Polo Field in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park attended by 55,000 fans.
The announcement that the tour was over was made by Pearl Jam publicist, Nicole Vandenberg. "The cancellation was brought on by the business problems and controversies surrounding the band's attempt to schedule an alternative tour. Tickets for the remaining dates on the tour were refunded".
"Pissed off about Pearl Jam? Call this number." Pieces of paper bearing this message floated down the streets of San Francisco a few days after PJ's Golden Gate Park concert Saturday, June 24th.
The other four other members of Pearl Jam met with their manager backstage after Eddie left the stage in San Francisco and went back to his hotel to rest. And decided, during that meeting, to cancel the forthcoming shows because "the pressures of a full-scale tour simply took the joy out of making music" and because they feared "those pressures would ultimately destroy the band if not dealt with".
"We were afraid there'd be a riot. Neil just went down and wore em out. After that show, Neil said you know what, if it doesn't feel right, go home. And the band looked at each other and said you know what, we feel like going home. So we called it quits and went home", Kelly Curtis (Pearl Jam manager).
"Right, those relationships with your parents and family are the hardest to figure out, and the same patterns get carried into a band situation. In Pearl Jam, the cliffs are very high and the chasms very deep. You have to face your own neuroses and problems through your band members. And everything that pisses you off about somebody in your band or your family is something inside yourself that you haven't dealt with. Every time we've realized, okay, we've fucked up about this or that, we've learned to find that space where the group is more important than any individual problem. And we've grown from it", Stone Gossard.

i was fortunatley pretty oblivious--I knew they had cancelled a tour but didn't read much more into it than that

So obviously firing Dave wasn't the issue, it was Eddie. I hope one day he will man up to that fact.
