Why couldn't the choose to headline the Virgin Mobile Freefest at Merriweather Post Pavilion in 2 months? Since its free no major artists are willing to perform so the headliners are Blink 182, Weezer, Franz Ferdinand, and Public Enemy. Those are decent bands considering the ticket price, but they're lightweights compared to the acts in the past.

Virgin? have never felt any interest in going to the UK one, all reports portrayed it as the most corporate festival you can get. I bloody it doesn't mean they'll play that one next time they do UK festivals!

Because it doesn't really matter?
I disagree with that. Tell that to the hundreds/thousands of people that on the last full scale US tour bought non refundable, non transferable ten club tickets to shows hundreds of miles away, only to have a show announced 3 weeks later that was 20 minutes from their homes.
I think for all the discussion about the increasing ticket prices, target, performing shows for "evil" multi-media corporations, etc... the handling of tour announcements (hell, the handling of any official news) and ticket sales has been the greatest disservice pearl jam has given their fans over the past 5-6 years or so.
but hey, guys like B can still just give the ole "chill pill" defense, when really people have a pretty valid reason to bitch.

I couldn't agree more with this post. Tour announcements and ticket sales are really all that matter to me. Both really come down to not giving a fuck about the fans. We try to pretend the band has no idea how lame their operations/10 Club is but it's their own fault if they aren't aware.
