I was thinking today how much I love that dark, sometimes even depressing Pearl Jam where you can lay back with your headphones and drift off. Got me thinking, here are my top ten favorite dark/moody songs from PJ.

1. Dead Man Walking - dark and moody, this song consumes you.
2. Sleight of Hand - Ethereal, other worldly, amazing song
3. Sometimes - amazingly immersive intro, goes on a bit long but I love it
4. Oceans - this song immerses me each time
5. Nothing as It Seems - Dark, foreboding electric guitar sound. Depressing but awsome.
6. I Got Shit - I love this song. Puts me in an awsome mood.
7. Present Tense - Not really a dark song, but it's the epitome of moody. It takes me to another place.
8. Immortality - It's a dark song, but it's also uplifiting. One of my favorites.
9. Indifference - One of The moodiest song ever!
10. Around the Bend - I've fallen asleep to this song a couple times. It's just gorgeous.

What are some of your favorites?

Alot of the same ones on your list, I love Dead Man, glad to see you ranked it so high. I would also add Not For You, Bushleaguer, and Release to name a few.

I think they've still yet to top that initial string of album closers with Release, Indifference, and Immortality. But the atmosphere on Vitalogy is tremendous from start to finish. While it's far from my favorite song I Got Shit is a pretty compelling piece of work. I am Mine has amazing atmosphere too

Musically NAIS has a terrific feel to it but it loses me with the lyrics. And Sleight of Hand is amazing as a piece of art, but I just don't like listening to it

I always really liked the lyrics to Nothing As It Seems. The dark lyrics fit the mood really well. I also know what you mean about Sleight of Hand. I think the song is fantastic, but it's one that I tend to skip sometimes because I just don't wanna hear it. It is so deep and powerful though, you gotta be in the mood for it.

And I think I would add Can't Keep, All or None and Fatal to my list. Great songs.

NAIS lyrics are in places superb and in others subpar.

Fuck Me In My Brain.

I thought that was pretty cool, it's one of those songs I listen to after a bad day. Even though it's technically an Improv.

Pretty much all that list + Strangest Tribe + Fatal + In My Tree if you consider this one dark/moody.
To be honest I find myself to care only about this kind of songs these days.

Funny, just thinking that there aren't really any of those somber, dark moments on S/T..Inside Job doesn't really come near any of those songs..Backspacers got 'em but they're kinda dark but beautiful..a first for Pj..they don't usually do beautiful..I can't think of them ever having done a beautiful song up until 'the End'

How did I not put Strangest Tribe. The song gives me chills when I listen to it. Definately a haunting song.
