NFL draft's first round moves to Thursday night for 2010

The NFL draft will kick off in primetime for the first time in 2010, it was announced Thursday. The first round of the 2010 NFL Draft will start on Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET, with the second and third rounds on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. ET, followed by Rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m. ET.
The draft will continue to be televised by ESPN and NFL Network. The 2010 NFL Draft -- the 75th draft in NFL history -- again will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
"We continue to look for ways to make the draft more accessible to more fans," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. "Moving the first round to prime time on Thursday night will make the first round of the draft available to fans on what is typically the most-watched night of television."
The 2009 NFL Draft (Saturday, April 25-Sunday, April 26) drew a record 39 million viewers on NFL Network, ESPN and ESPN2. Total NFL Draft viewership increased 66 percent from 2001 to 2009 (from 23.5 million to 39 million).
The first round of last year's draft on ESPN and NFL Network drew a combined average of 6.3 million viewers, topping all basketball, hockey and baseball games that weekend.
The NFL draft was a Saturday-Sunday event from 1995 to 2009. It took place on Sunday and Monday from 1988 to 1994, and prior to 1988, it was held on one or two weekdays.
I will most definitely be watching the NHL Playoffs on Thursday and Friday and following the Draft online instead of watching it all day Saturday.
Seriously, it's an obvious ratings grab. And I'll have a nice little Saturday at the Home Depot and maybe hit Bed Bath and Beyond. I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.

the team with the worst record gets to make the first pick
from there it goes in reverse order of the teams records of who didnt make the playoffs.
for example, the lions were 0-16 last year, so they got the first pick the second team to get the pick would have the second worst record, say 1-15
once you get to teams that made the playoffs, i believe it goes by their winning percentage in the playoffs, and in the event of a tie, they use other breakers to decide who picks where.
the team with the last pick would win the superbowl, while the team with the next to last pick would be the runners up.

The only picks in the draft that are changed after postseason play are the two Super Bowl teams picking #31/32.

DANA POINT, Calif. -- The NFL owners concluded their annual meeting Wednesday by voting to alter the draft order of picks Nos. 21 through 30 based on the teams' performance in the playoffs.
The new draft order will apply to every round of the draft. Under the new format, which will take effect in 2010, the order of teams not in the playoffs is still based on record -- i.e., the team with the worst record will receive the No. 1 draft pick.
For the rest, there will be a reseeding based on how far the teams go in the playoffs. For example, the losers of the wild-card games will be seeded 21st through 24th based on their records.
The losers in the divisional rounds will be seeded 25th through 28th. Teams eliminated in the conference championship games will be seeded 29th and 30th.
The Super Bowl loser will be seeded 31st. The Super Bowl winner will receive the final pick in each round.

I see but what if you don't want to play for the Browns? You are shit hot and you end up playing for the worst team. I know it is meant to create more equal competition but fuck that. How does the money work? Say you get picked but they offer you shit money or does everyone get paid the same?

you can sit out for X amount of years, 1 or 2 i think, and reenter the draft. money is ridiculous for draft picks in the first round. usually guaranteed for the first couple of rounds. there have been hold outs, where the player didnt think he was being offered enough cash.
Or the player can pull a bitch move like Elway or Eli Manning and tell the team he won't play for them if they're picked. Then the team can pick them and trade them if they want.

To clarify what Peeps and Joe said, the 32 teams have agreed amongst themselves that the rights to a drafted player that isn't signed remain with that team for one year, of which they could then re-enter next year's draft.
In practice, this almost never happens. The only high profile player I can think of doing this is when Bo Jackson was drafted first overall by the Bucs in 1986, but decided he wanted to play baseball instead (which also gave him a lot of money). In the next year's draft, he was taken (much to my great dismay ) by the Raiders, and he played with them for a few years until he had a career ending injury.
Also, there is an unwritten rule between teams and the players' agents that rookies will sign contracts with X amount of money, depending on the order they were drafted. There's a lot of controversy about this right now, because the money that the top ten picks are getting are being considered ludicrous for players that haven't even played a down of professional football.

cheers thanks for the enlightenment. I wonder if a draft system would stop the domination of the big teams in soccer. In most of the big leagues across Europe it is very easy to predict the winner from at most a group of 3 or 4.

One of the great things about the NFL is parity, which the draft obviously helps. Players like Matt Ryan can turn a team from a joke into a playoff contender pretty quickly.
