My Grandma sent me a postcard in the mail today in which she mentioned Yo La Tengo. True story.

YLT deliver hard, again.

but is anyone really surprised anymore? If you can name me a more consistent band in the last 20 years, I'll give you...well, it doesn't matter, because you can't

*ahem*

Earth
the collected works of Justin Broaderick in Godflesh and Jesu
The Mountain Goats (but that's closer to 15 years)
Morbid Angel
Neurosis
Sonic Youth
Ween

but yeah, the list is pretty tiny indeed. That is a long time to be really good. Yo la Tengo is a tops band in my book

Thank you Lenny and Zeb. She is tops. Please resume YLT discourse. Hopefully when I get some time to myself, I will be able to listen to this one.

Sonic Youth have had a couple arguable stinkers in the same time frame.

Yo La Tengo Murders the classics? You could make a pretty decent argument either way I think. I'm only acquainted with about 5 YLT albums, so I'm not the man.

I guess in my defense if never heard NYC Ghosts and FLowers or Murray Street or some of those other post Washing Machine, pre Rather Ripped albums

I wouldn't count YLT are Murdering the Classics as a real album. I don't remember if it was actually live in one take or it was compilation, anyway.

but in terms of studio records,

Fakebook
May I Sing With Me
Painful
Electr-O-Pura
I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
Summer Sun
I Am Not Afraid Of You...
Popular Songs

all of those are practically essential if you like the band. Only Summer Sun might be considered the "weak link," but even then, if I'm in the right mood it's really wonderful. A completely stunning run.

as for Sonic Youth, forget the other two you mentioned, but you have to hear Murray Street. I'd put it in my top 5 SY records easily.

please tell me why both Painful and And Nothing... are essential.

Not challenging you here, just curious what you have to say.

I DL'd this and Fuckbook today and my first impressions are that I like this one much more. I actually think I like this more than I'm Not Afraid of You..

There's a certain mood on this one that is perfect for fall and this weird funk I've been in about school and work lately. I love downtempo YLT.
