The music is almost secondary to the writing though..there's one liners in there that are gold :0 Roddy Doyle is an amazingly gifted writer..if you like this you should see the 2 sequels, the Snapper and the Van..absolutely essential. Also he has a book called 'a star called henry' it's incredible.

When this film first came out, my aunt was living in Sydney, and apparently the only people laughing in the cinema were herself, her husband, and one of their mates that came over from Dublin with them. No-one else in the cinema could understand the accent, or the humour.
I fucking love this movie, there's just so many cracking little jokes in it that land you in kinks, it's brilliant. Colm Meaney is brilliant in it. That exchange by the back gate about Evil Kenievil (I can't spell his name, or remember the quote), or the bit about Elvis taking drugs are just fantastic. Some of my favourite bits:
"We are The Commitments!" "Well, it has a 'the'..." "How do you spell that?" "T.H.E."
"I can't play piano wearing sunglasses!" "Why not? Ray Charles did."
"We can't play soul, we're not black!" "The way I see it, the Irish are the blacks of Europe, and the Dubs are the blacks of Ireland, and the Northsiders are the blacks of Dublin. Of course we can play soul!"
It's also a great movie for a good laugh at a young and gawky looking Glen Hansard, bless 'im!

Weirdly, Commitments ends with him as a busker on grafton street..Once begins with him as a busker on grafton street..nice through line..very intentional also

Ta, it's been a long time since I've seen it, my quoting's a bit muzzy...
And unfortunately, that's the problem with his acting career, throughout Once I kept expecting him to lapse into Outspan, what a disappointment!
I suppose geography is pretty important....although I'm the only person in my neck of the woods who appreciates Election....but it's mostly 'pretty good' in my humbled opinion and book.
