I won a 42 inch Dynex LCD, and I like it. Then again I would've been fine with the old school 36 inch I bought with my high school graduation money back when they were still square-shaped, and I couldn't really give a fuck about "black level."

Does 720 v. 1080 really make a big difference? As in the $3-500 difference it makes in price?

There's actually quite a bit of difference. There's a big difference between 1080i and 1080p too. Just go down to your local b+m store and ask them to fire up a blue ray on a 1080p display next to a display showing the same movie at 1080i and you'll be amazed. My local Costco was doing this comparison for quite a while and you could clearly tell the difference in picture quality.

April, just a heads up that there's a deal running now on a 1080p Sony Bravia 40" LCD at slickdeals for $699. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

Well, we got a plasma 2 months ago but it ended up being a bad panel. There was this annoying horizontal semi-transparent line that was very annoying. It got picked up last Saturday, so hopefully getting it repaired/replaced by the weekend.

Yeah, slickdeals is always the place to check before making any purchases. I would also do some extra work by reading up on specific models on cnet for anyone considering.

I'm down to debating between the TC-P42x1 or the TC-P50x1. Same model, different sizes. Panasonic Plasma 720p 600hz, 30,000x1. The 42" is onsale for $599 at Sears right now and the 50" is $899. Both have decent to good reviews from Cnet and the like, customer reviews are higher for both on pretty much every website I've checked out. The 50" has some cases of digital lines being present according to Cnet, but of all the many customer reviews nobody seems to mention that, so maybe it isn't really that big a deal.

Btw Sears also has the upgraded model of the same tv 42" 1080p for $899.

I;d go with the 42 @1080

I went with the tc-p50x1. Just got the email that its ready for in-store pick up. Very excited. It was on sale for $899, but I bought it online last night for an extra 5% off; I also got to Sears through bing.com for 8% cashback, so all in all that's $837 with tax. Not too shabby. When I go into the store I'm going to try to get another 5% off because they were offering a 5% MIR if you used a Sears card; I opened a Sears card for that 5% based on the sales rep telling me I would have a temporary number that I could use to make that purchase last night, but that proved to not be the case. So I'm going to go in and tell the manager the story, close that credit card, and hope that he'll throw me the 5% to make me go away. Now if only I would man up and be strong when I'm actually there. :?

Either way I'm excited!

well, my panasonic bit the dust this weekend. appears to be the power supply. tv won't power on and i get a 7 flash code on the power indicator. i started googling panasonic 7... and google filled in the rest for me. i knew that was bad news. the good news is that since its under warranty, they are sending someone to my house to repair it, and it sounds like a pretty simple fix.

I'm going to be getting a new tv in the next couple weeks. I think I'm going with an LCD due to the brightness of the room, plus I want to be able to plug my laptop into it without causing screen burn.

I'm going for a 1080p, but other than that, what are some specifications that I should be keeping an eye out for? A high contrast ratio seems pretty improtant I would think. Is it worth it to pay a little extra to go from say 20,000:1 to 50,000:1? What about the "refesh rate"? A lot of the models in my price range are 60Hz. Is 120Hz worth paying a little extra for?

so the repairman finally made it out to my house yesterday to fix my 46" panasonic plasma tv. they basically took the back off, replaced all but one of the circuit boards without even testing anything, covered it back up and everything was working again. i asked them what i would have had to pay for the boards separately, and they said neighborhood of $2000. the tv cost me $1400 back in october last year :?

OK RM, help me out here.

I've got a beautiful 62" Toshiba rear-projection DLP HDTV in my living room. It's my baby, along with the Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver and the PS3. However, there are times when I like to chill in my room and enjoy a movie, and right now my old Mitsubishi big-screen is dying a slow death. So, it's time to upgrade. I don't need anything too big (I think 40" - 42"will be sufficient. It's not going to get tons of use so I don't need anything ridiculous, that's what the living room is for. Thoughts? Deals?

If you want super thin and with low consumption, try a Samsung LCD with LED backlighting.

Looks nice but is about $1800 more than what I want to spend on a TV that won't get used too often!

You want a 40" for 600 dollars? This would give you a lame 32" :|

Why not this one? http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/deta ... B610A5FXZA

Still quite good, great bang for the buck.

My suggestion is to go to slickdeals.net multiple times a day. A good 40" or 42" for $600 is definitely doable.
