Don't ask how this has been bought to my attention, but this website has published a peice on the imminent return of the world's worst band, Creed. After an honest (and not overly flaterring) overview on the band's past, there I appears to be an interview with Mark Tremonti (I think). When he's asked about the band's supposed similarity to Pearl Jam, he says "If you listen to Pearl Jam and listen to the music of Creed, they're not similar. Pearl Jam is a blues-based jam band."
Really? Not exactly how I'd describe the band. When the interviewer then suggests that it may just be the vocals that are similar (really?), he pretty much ignores the question and re-iterates the irrelevance of how his roots are from heavy metal. Now, obviously they're going to distance themselves and try to avoid comparisons between the bands. But it's the abruptness that any talk of the (apparent) similarities are squashed and the evident sensitivity of the subject that I find interesting... Along with the description of Pearl Jam's musical style.
Anyway, here's the two questions on the issue...
Quote:
The Creed sound is heavily influenced by Pearl Jam and that grunge era. Is there still much life in that sound?
Well, I was never influenced musically. ... If you listen to Pearl Jam and listen to the music of Creed, they're not similar. Pearl Jam is a blues-based jam band, and musically I grew up ... I actually grew up in speed metal, which you can't tell from listening to Creed, but with the Alter Bridge stuff you hear a little bit more of it. If you listen to the bare music between Pearl Jam and Creed, you're not going to find much similarity, I wouldn't think.
A lot of it might be in the vocal style.
Like I said, I grew up listening to heavy metal so my roots are in either classical finger-picking stuff or heavy downpicking rhythms.

He seems to say this with pride. How could he not be influenced musically and end up playing rock music? As if he sat at home his whole childhood completely sheltered from any music and then came up with a style that sounds remarkably similar to a lot of bands before him.

I never thought I'd be defending Mark Tremonti, but I think he was saying that he had not been influenced musically by Pearl Jam.

funny...singers like scott stapp always are tagged as trying to sound like eddie...but the style of all those bands and the way they try to sing always made me think they were trying to sound more like layne than eddie.
