Something I did for a friend over the last couple of days. Acrylic paints on a 32" x 40" canvas. Apologies for the wonky picture and too much flash.

That looks absolutely gorgeous.

... But I have to admit I read the topic title as "Ray Charles [is] painting".

I think that's great. I really admire people that can paint. :)

32 inches by 40.

I hung it on a wall to take the picture. What do you mean by underpainted?

that's a good size piece! nice.

i don't know if that's the name for it, but did you do all the values first and then put in the colors?

Yeah, it's pretty huge. It was the biggest canvas they had in that day. It's much more fun to work big though, you can be a little more expressive and fuck about a little more.

I worked from a google image and rougly sketched a grid over it so I could keep everything in check. I had to fiddle with the original image a bit make the width and length correspond to the canvas size I had, and that's why I painted a black trim at the top and bottom. From there I just sketched a rough pencil outline onto the canvas, and then began painting and built up the colours. Acrylics dry pretty fast so you can layer and paint over things almost straight away, which suits my style.
