Release Date: May 27th, 2011

Cast: Sean Penn, Brad Pitt

Synopsis: We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, Jack, one of three brothers. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world’s way of putting oneself first. Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.

From this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part. When he sees all that has gone into our world’s preparation, each thing appears a miracle—precious, incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life.

The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the family—our first school—the only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover life’s single most important lesson, of unselfish love.

Really? I guess I'm just not into the subject matter at all. I'll have to give it a watch.

You said Terrence Malick is awesome and you haven't even seen all of his movies? He's only made four for fuck's sake!

The New World is pretty good anyway. I'd say it's as good as Badlands and Days of Heaven, but not as good as The Thin Red Line.

I'm not implying that, I just mean if you think a director is awesome and he's only made four movies, why not watch all four?

Because the one had Colin Farrel and was about Pochahontas. I figured he was due for a bad one as well. Like I said, I'll check it out.

It's good despite that, trust me. His direction is still great. Some of the nature imagery is as good as anything he's ever filmed.

Apparently this film is about three boys in the 1950s, set in a small town.

I'm already in love with it. Nostalgia and Malick.

Also, RE: the nostalgia thing, 3/4 of his movies are historical in one way or another.

To have dinosaurs? Hmm? Oh that Malick! He's a trickster!

http://chud.com/articles/articles/18329 ... Page1.html

Our picture is a cosmic epic, a hymn to life.

We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, Jack, one of three brothers. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does, with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world's way, of putting oneself first. Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.

Framing this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part. When he sees all that has gone into our world's preparation, each thing appears a miracle — precious, incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life.

The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the family -- our first school -- the only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover life's single most important lesson, of unselfish love.

Yeah, there's nothing about dinosaurs in there, but Jeff Wells has quotes from the paper edition of Empire Magazine's interview with FX artist Mike Fink, who says "We're just starting work on a project for Terrence Malick, animating dinosaurs, the film is The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. It'll be showing in IMAX -- so the dinosaurs will actually be life size -- and the shots of the creatures will be long and lingering."

I have a love hate with Sean Penn. He's undeniably a great actor but the fact that he only seems to take Oscar bait movies annoys me.

'Tree Of Life' Hits U.S. Theaters December 25
Updates: we've got a better scan.

If all goes according to plan and if all goes well in the notoriously finicky editing room, Terrence Malick's long-awaited, "The Tree Of Life," (dubbed a "mystical epic")will hit U.S. theaters on December 25 via the newly-named Apparition distributors according to Entertainment Weekly's Fall Preview edition (here's an improved scan that we tried to clean up a little bit in photoshop, the piece is obviously not online yet).

Makes complete sense since trade reports already said the film would hit sometime in December (or the "late holiday season," but what else is that but December?).

Could Sony Pictures be somehow involved? Last week on a Johnny Depp message board, an observant reader noted that imaginariummovie.com, redirected to the Sony movies website and then a day later, Sony Pictures Classics announced they would distribute "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" (a film that Depp co-stars in).

This week, a perceptive IMDB reader notes that http://www.thetreeoflife-movie.com was purchased by Sony Pictures last week, and now redirects to their website. Update: A fellow blogger tells us the original press release -- which we didn't receive -- had info on the Sony connection, so we guess that's that. There's no mystery there.

Anyhow, "Tree Of Life," an official date. Get hyped. Now all it has to do is live up to the tiny, little expectations. Sean Penn, Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain star. People are wondering if 12/25 is a limited release and our guess is it is. How accurate is EW, well they've listed Michael Haneke's "The White Ribbon," as 12/30 and we definitely know that date's confirmed and its also a limited date release for opening.
