Looking for reccomendations. My favorite artists are Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Mark Lanegan, and Tom Waits. I tend to go in for good lyricists and striking voices

Neil Young! :o

Okay I guess I should have stayed out of this thread, but maybe I'll give it a shot: Murder By Death - Red Of Tooth And Claw

Blind Melon. Their debut album is pretty much flawless.

The one record I've really gotten into lately is Swoon by the Silversun Pickups. It has the distorted sound of Siamese Dream, but there's keyboard and strings all over it. I dunno if the lyrics would do anything for you, but the music itself is fairly cool.

It's hard to know what ELSE you like with just a handful of examples, but Nick is fucking where it's at.

Hard to know what consitutes a "striking" voice, either, with Stipe included in the list. A Memorable or unique voice? Does M Ward have a striking voice? Does Neil Young? Sufjan Stevens? Springsteen? Joe Strummer? The guy from Protest the Hero?

Joe Henry's Tiny Voices would probably be a good record, for someone into Tom Waits and Mark L. Not that it SOUNDS like them. But.

while you might have already checked out or heard The National... based on your favorite artists and your interest in great lyricists & striking voices...

i gotta say that The National totally fit that mold. Berninger is my favorite lyricist of the 00's by a country mile and his baritone is certainly striking.

if you haven't heard them yet, check out Boxer and Alligator.

I wouldn't say the lyrics are bad by any measure, but they're several of those country miles away from being especially great.
