Thanks everyone for taking part in round 1 of our little experiment. Ready for round 2?
This idea is being borrowed from the Master/Slave board on the fabulous, wonderful Pearljamnetwork.com site. Sadly, both are extinct, but hopefully this idea will be as successful on RM as it was there.
SONG OF THE MOMENT!
Things are fairly quiet right now in Pearl Jam World. We speculate over new album information and are all foaming at the mouth for the first record since Fall 2002, yes it's been that long. SOTM gives us a chance to come together and talk about the music in a very focused manner. Many of these songs touch us in different ways and this is a great medium for enjoying the reason we are all here, the music.
The Song of the Moment discussion goes as follows. A moderator or myself will start a new thread. We'll post the lyrics of the song along with links to the previous discussions.
Red Mosquito Written By: Vedder, Pearl Jam Album: No Code Release Date: 1996-08-27
watched from the window, with a red mosquito i was not allowed to leave the room i saw the sun go down, and now it's coming up somewhere in the time between i was bitten, must have been the devil he was just paying me... a little visit, reminding me of his presence letting me know, he's a-waiting... oh red man's your neighbor, call it behavior while you're climbing up slippery hills two steps ahead of him, punctures in your neck hovering just above your bed hovering just above your bed i was bitten, must have been the devil he was just paying me... a little visit, reminding me of his presence and letting me know, he's a'waiting, he's a'waiting... up there... yeah if i had known then what i know now... if i had known then what i know now... if i had known then what i know now... if i had known then what i know now...

When I first listened to No Code, I'll admit it, I was greatly disappointed.
I just didn't "get" a lot of the songs, but I got this one.
There's so many PJ songs that just have a "moment" for me. Just that one defining break or word or beat that nails it down so fucking hard.
With RM it's the very end of "a little visit, reminding me of his presence
letting me know, he's a-waiting... oh". That huge crash when Ed bellows out "OOHHHHHHHHHH", just freakin wow man. The build up to it is short but tremendous, what a climax.
This is a song for me that's much more about music and soundscape than lyrics. They're a bit vague and I usually interpret it as a part of Ed's cryptosporidium episode that summer . Anyhow, thank fucking god they did this wonderful tribute to Crazy Horse.

I love that part of the song. I also love the opening guitar-lead to the song. One of my favourites off No Code(along with Smile), and it bugs me every time the band starts 1/2 Full, as I expect them to crank out this one.
The song reminds me lying on my bed in the middle of the summer, a little buzzed and seeing things.

I think this song is greatly underrated. If all the weanies out there that think PJ went soft with No Code must overlook Red Mosquito. It is just a clear cut great tune. really cool riff, awesome solo, great lyrics and vocals. its classic. I wish they'd play it more live. It is also awesome on Lo2L.
Its funny that you guys picture the song to be calm and chill on a summer evening. I picture a guy chained to a bed, struggling to get out of bed thinking he is being attacked by some ghastly ghoul. Then during the bridgey part (if i had know then...) I think i symbloized regret

I'm with ya. This song doesn't stir my emotions like most other PJ songs, but I really like grooving to the sounds. When I hear Mike's guitar, especially live, I can see a mosquito buzzing around the room...buuuuzzzzz....buuuuuzzzzz...

And Lukin...and Hail Hail...and Habit! And even Mankind to an extent...I still don't understand the problems people have with this album.

I felt the same away about no code upon first buying it, I was confused, i didn't understand what I bought, but this song stuck out like a sore thumb, some killer guitar work, and the chorus at the end of if I had know then what I know now speaks so much to in volume of life and how great this album is.

From the very begining this was my favorite song off of No Code. Killer guitar work, great lyrics. Vitalogy is my favorite album and this one could have fit right in with it. I feel like Pearl Jam's guitar anthems have suffered in the back half of ther career, but this is one of the songs that still holds up to the crazy standards they set for themselves

I have to agree, this song is all about soundscape for me. I spent 10 years as a casual PJ fan --couldn't even tell you the song names on Ten and yet it was among my favorite albums. Last year (nearly a year to the date) I had a kind of awakening about Pearl Jam (and music in general). This was one of the first songs in my daily Pearl Jam listening after my "awakening". However, I usually listen to the Live on Two legs version.
Hey, I really like this thread. I hope you keep it up. It's fun to start the day thinking about one PJ song.

The first time I really listened to this song, the ending made me cry. This is in my top 10 PJ songs, and I'm glad Boom won't be around on the tour to ruin it.
I rememember hearing Red Mosquito live before No Code came out. My first thought was that it reminded me of Deep. It's one of my favorite songs. I think the LO2L version is still my favorite

The great thing about PJ is that you can always look at their music and see it through different angles based on where you are in your life...that being said RM is one of those songs that hits me hard...
You spent a period of time being a fuck, and no matter what you do to redeem yourself, its always there...reminding me of his presence, letting me know, he's awaiting

You really don't know that.
But the first time I heard this song I hated it. I even heard it live a few times and still hated it. Then one day I was out driving and decided to play No Code. I was driving through the country and RM came on and decided to let it play. It clicked. I don't know why. THe words, the music. I got it. And I liked the song ever since.
I know it's not a great story but I think of driving on a nice sunny day in the country every time I hear the song now.

This is kind of an off and on one for me... at times I love it, other times it just sort of fades into the background and I'll go long periods without even listening to it.
Lyrically, I think it's one of their best.
I like the way it's constantly changing pace, it's not repetitive in any way.

Another great song off No Code
Probaly not the most moving PJ song but is lyrically and musically strong
I love the ending how it goes "if only I knew then what i know now"
