So I have a Sega-Genesis that I felt like busting out tonight, and am trying to hook it up to my new Sony LCD TV. I have the RF cable hookup into the cable/antenna insert in the back of the tv.

all the games look really bad.

What might work is going to radioshack and getting an rf modulator. Hook the sega up to that and the modulator to the tv.

idk...i mean it looks really choppy (more than it does on a tube tv). It also could just be the size, but idk.

Too much upscaling. A 720p display would look better than a 1080p in this case.

Use an emulator and take advantage of your computer's power to boost up video. It won't do miracles but it can make it a little less painful to the eyes.

Anything. Saying computer vs television isn't much of an argument as they aren't nearly the same thing. A computer is a complex machine (which is displayed on a monitor) capable of carrying out many programs. A television is a monitor with a tuner. Most people don't even make use of the tuner as they use it with a cable or satellite receiver. So a television is basically a monitor like any other.
Comparing a computer to a television is bizarre. The former basically makes use of the latter as an integral component. And the is latter is reliant on other devices for input.

Much more tangible arguments would be: Internet Video vs Cable/Satellite, Computer games vs Console Games.


A comparison of computer vs television as a form of entertainment. This is the basic difference between tvs and computers. With tvs you veg out and watch movies and shows. Computers give you a bunch of options. You can email and socialize, the actively engaging, but you can certainly relax too. There is a reason why hard drive space is increasing exponentially and that is to store our photos, music, and videos. We also have the ever-expanding internet to stream video whenever we want. Of course it may be hard to relax in a chair pulled up a foot from your monitor, but read on...


Well if I'm watching tv on the internet or playing a game I have it displayed on my hdtv. Any computer with a decent video card can be hooked up to an hdtv. And there you have it. A computer can be played on a monitor, hdtv, projector, multiple display units, whatever you please.


On a larger scale than our discussion here (and off topic by the way. Read at your own caution ), the abilities of TVs and computers are quickly overlapping (with the rise of digital content with tvs and broadband internet allowing streaming videos). Notice how major content providers like Verizon and Time Warner are providing all inclusive packages (Internet, tv, phone). These services are all quickly becoming redundant. Everything is digital, so what is the difference if you receive your video through a cable box or a broadband modem? Does it matter if you call your friend from your digital phone or a voip client?

Sure broadband speeds still may not quite deliver 1920x1080 for a while, but I'm not even sure if cable broadcasts a that resolution either. Either way, these services are merging. The writing is on the wall, these corporations didn't become huge by being stupid. Sooner than later an all content digital subscription will be all you can get.

alright, modify what i said to traditional computer complex. with monitor attached, not hooked up to the tv. hooking up the system to the tv is a completely different animal and you're right, not much different from watching tv itself (especially for video games or movies). but people were writing off the use of tvs earlier in the topic, and not suggesting to hook the computer up to the tv, and i was mostly issuing a rebuttal to that.
