i've always wanted to get a new system but i'm perpetually afraid that as soon as i buy one a new one will come right after. i think the last one i bought was nintendo 64.
my gf that i'm living with wants a wii, which i think is fun and i could play with her, but i'm more into games like halo, bioshock, god of war, etc. what do most people think, xbox vs ps3? and who has a wii?
are there any new systems that are supposed to come out in the next few years?
Wii is good for casual play but is hurt by limited game choice. 360 is sweet and has great titles, particularly FPS franchises like Halo and GOW. PS3 uses/plays Blu-ray discs and has a couple of very nice exclusives.
I read the other day that the 360 has another four years to go in its lifecycle. PS3 would have to have at least another two or three years in it.

thanks that's very helpful. i'm personally leaning toward 360 but i pretty much have to buy the wii for my gf.
how do you guys feel about buying used consoles? i've seen some wii's for like half the price.

On the plus side of getting a Wii, you have Smash Brothers, Mario, Metroid, and some other good stuff. Plus you can play the entire Gamecube catalog if I'm not mistaken which adds to the cataog.

invention, zeb doesnt have a PS3, so he cant rank shit
all the 3 systems have + and - points
for playing with the girlfriend, get the WII, no doubt (i have a ps3 and my gf has a wii)
the 360xps3 fight is endless, both are great systems, you should check the games, controller, if you want a blu-ray system, the multiplayer online (ps3 is free, 360 is paid)

decide how much you want to spend... include the cost of games, controllers, cables if you have an HDTV, online shit, etc check out the games. dont listen to anyone who says that "system x sucks, y is sooo much better". they are idiots, end of discussion. wii is the most accessible. 360 is next. ps3 is, overall, for people who have been playing for years. dont forget about backward compatibility... ie wii has gc games, 360 can play most xbox games... etc

thanks, i think i'm just going to get a wii so i can play with my gf. now that i'm working and not home that much, i don't think its a good idea to spend hours ignoring her playing a FPS.

that depends. I took a chance 2 years ago and bought a used PS3 and it's worked stellar for me in that time, but that was back when they cost over $500 and i got it for much less. I wasn't prepared to spend that kind of money on a new one.
But the price of consoles today is pretty affordable, so i'd probably play it safe and go new this time around if mine were to break. The plus side of buying used though is that you can usually get a bunch of extras like games and extra controllers, etc thrown in for cheap. Those are the big things that make buying a new system a giant pain in the ass. It's not the $300 for the new system that kills you, it's the extra $200-300 you have to spend on games and accessories before you can even play it.

Word. For my money the exclusives on the PS3 are just as good, if not better than the 360.

I still just have a PS2 and play it all the time, so I wouldn't worry about a new system coming out. Just enjoy the one you have and the fact that everything for it gets a lot cheaper if/when a new one drops.

there are a lot of those i'm not a huge fan of. but some look good, but i haven't had a chance to play them. i'd take gears over any of those that i've played or seen or played other parts of the series, except maybe littlebigplanet.

id agree with what MF said. if there was a HUGE price difference, it would probably be worth it. EBgames/ gamestop sells "refurbished" systems, though im not sure if that actually means anything... it might just be a more attractive way of saying 'used'. it probably depends on the individual store you get it from. the only advantage to a used system (other than price) is that it most likely isnt a lemon, which a new one may be. wii is the least expensive system anyway. if youre able to make a big purchase like that you may as well shell out an extra few blickies and go new. hope it works out for ya, there are several wii games (zelda, metroid, and a few others) that id really like to try.

Heavy Rain alone makes me consider getting a PS3

I'll correct than and say not too many GOOD exclusives anymore
exceptions being ratchet and clank and god of war and maybe Heavy Rain (TBD)
