I'm not sure if there has been a thread made on this. There was an article I read recently about how parents have tried to get access to email accounts, facebook, etc, after their child had died. It got me thinking about the vast amount of information we leave behind in the digital age. I have over 10,000 posts on here. Most of them are worthless but one day I wouldn't be surprised if my child would be fascinated by reading each and every post, almost like a diary. I know, lol @ me procreating.
I guess my questions are:
If you died, would you want your loved ones to ever be able to read your email, your message board posts, your facebook? Further, what steps have you taken to protect yourself from people gaining access to these?
I find it personally interesting because before this board, I had not saved anything - digital or physical. I take very little photos and don't even have an archive of emails past a couple years. Since I share a great deal of my life on here (in GD), I think many of my loved ones (future really) would be rather interested in the content, though I'm not sure I'd want to share - even in death.

My sister-in-law died last year, and my wife and her family were very interested in accessing her yahoo account and facebook. They had to give proof of her death, but it was actually remarkably easy to work with the providers to turn over access.

The article said that. After reading it, it got me thinking that I might need to put in my will explicitly what I want done with my accounts.

I don't mind at all. My blog, facebook, e-mail, etc... it's all who I am. I don't mind if anyone finds anything out. There are some embarrassing things in my e-mail, but fuck, that'd just be funny, I think.

a guy who i chatted with through ESPN and played fantasy football with for 8 years passed away two years ago. no one in our league knew about it (he was older, mid 50s) until his GF finally got possession of his accounts.
i was kinda bummed about it obviously as i have talked to him on the phone a few times and he was a nice enough guy, but what really bummed me is he lived in philly and thats where he was buried. i was there just about the time of the funeral, but the contact information came way to late and i would have liked to attend

I agree. However, there are things I'd rather my mom not know about/see simply because she is my mom and from a different generation and might not "get" it all.

*RIP Pops*
That's the part I've always wondered about. I'd want my "internet people" to at least know I was gone.

i've thought about this before...i'm a very private person and i wouldn't want family members to have access to any online account i might have...not that i have anything to hide really, just a personal preference

Um, what are you talking about?
i think he's talking about the fixer.
Never mind. The gist of it was why not. You'll be dead so you won't have any embarassment.

If you'd like, we can revive the Theresa account and give you access. Although you have to stay "in character."
