The Insane Clown Posse's "Bang Pow Boom" -- the Detroit duo's eleventh studio album -- debuts at No. 4 on this week's Billboard 200, tying 1999's "The Amazing Jeckel Brothers" for the top chart position in the group's history. The album sold 50,000 copies its first week in stores.
"I feel spectacular," said ICP's Violent J, not long after receiving the news on Wednesday. He credits the "superteam" at their label, Psychopathic Records, for their hard work, and the positive energy surrounding the project.
The album -- released in three separate editions, each with its own distinct artwork and bonus tracks -- marks the return of the group's Dark Carnival storyline, and was the group's most heavily promoted effort in years. ICP sat down for an extensive interview with Howard Stern on his Sirius XM Satellite Radio program on the day of its release, during which group member Shaggy 2 Dope came clean about his struggles with alcohol abuse.
J -- real name Joe Bruce -- said he was so anxious about the sales figures that he had trouble sleeping Tuesday, and visited Billboard's Web site at 6 a.m. looking for chart news. He finally received the news when he arrived at Psychopathic headquarters in Farmington Hills Wednesday morning.
He said the office was all smiles. "Everybody was excited," he said. "We're just looking for some good news, man. This is a huge project for us."
ICP's last album, 2007's "The Tempest," debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard chart. "Bang Pow Boom" also debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's independent albums chart.
At the top of the chart, Whitney Houston's comeback album "I Look to You" debuts at No. 1, with first week sales of more than 304,000. "Whitney Houston's had it all, all she can do is have it again," J said. "But you've got no complaints over here. We're happy being the fourth horsemen."
ICP is heading out on an extensive fall tour, which J calls the biggest production they've ever embarked on. The tour kicks off Sept. 17 in Minneapolis, and hits Detroit Oct. 31 for the group's annual Halloween show.
J said a special edition of "Bang Pow Boom," containing various bonus material from the three separate editions of the album, will hit stores around Christmas.
