I like Amongst the waves, but it's towards the bottom of the record for me. I think the chorus just needs to be a tiny bit faster. it's too midtempo. But the verses and the pre chorus are great. One of the things this song does that's really interesting is start to build almost instantly--it's ramping up to the chorus almost from the first note of each verse. I can't think of another PJ song off the top of my head that builds so quickly. It's great. I wish the chorus matched it

Don't you worry about that. By the time they do it live It'll be 25% faster at least.

I respectfully disagree good sir!

I think the chorus is a perfect example of being in the moment. It doesn't drop below or fly above , but it is within the moment (amongst the waves if you will). The chorus has this perfect pulse thumping through.

I find it to create a very believable experience that takes me into the moment that Ed is describing.

It's a good contrast to the subtle chorus. I really like the guitar licks. Definitely a patient surfer song.

I like the song alot but I thought I would absolutely love it from the 30 second clip, so i guess im a little disappointed. Its missing something, not sure what it is, it just doesnt reach the heights you feel like is coming. It feels like it could be 1 of their best ever songs but just doesnt quite reach that level. Oh well, still a really really good song

It's always interesting to hear other people's song preferences. This one is probably my favorite song on the album.

I cant decide on this song.

I feel like the chorus needs to just take off....but it never does....kind of doesn't hit any peak....i think thats where my confusion sets in.

It pushes it, but it never makes the final stretch to the top of the mountain.

The Jam leading to the buildup will be dynamite live.

Good song, a little too polished, like the entire album.

I think that's sort of the intent. Rather than building/falling/building/falling/REALLY REALLY building it's sort of just a slow rise to the end. Unthought Known works similarly. Quiet verse/Loud chorus is the mold and I like how ATW breaks that.

This song is a perfect example of a song that can be completely amazing LIVE. The album version is just a bit too short to reach the heights that it should. The build up is awsome, the chorus is fantastic and the mid solo is also great. If they continue the momentum live and keep on with the chorus, the entire crowd will be singing along "I GOTTA SAY IT NOW!!!" :bammer: :bammer:

I can already see that ATW is going to get the 'Dissident' treatment, i.e., an absolutely brilliant song that is so totally underrated by the hardcore fan base.

P.S. This should definitely be the next single.....

ATW is a great song, however the "without love I would be drowning" lyrics seem a little childish, but when the chorus kicks in it more than makes up for it.

'If not for love, I would be drowning.' Subtle difference, but I think it narrowly escapes the shitty pop song cliche that 'without love' would've been. The sentiment ends up being 'If I hadn't received love through my life, I would be...' It's retrospective, rather than just present tense, ie. 'If I didn't have your love NOW, I'd be drowning.'

Well argued, I stand corrected.

well said. Much of this record is a celebration of love in some form or another, which has been an undercurrent on all their records (it's what saved them from the cynicism of their peers) but it's never been as explicit as it is here.
