tools cover is amazing, but nothing ever beats the live versions of this song from Zep. The early renditions were so moody and eery and have the best jams i've ever heard (sorry Pearl Jam) , just listen to the original The Song Remains The Same soundtrack (not the remastered CD nor the Film versions, as they cut out about a minute or two of the jam at the crucial moment where its transitioning from jam to the main keyboard riff...i will never understand why they cut this song at all for TSRTS CD in the remaster)

And also the song in later years has amazing melodies too, but never as moody or as fitting to the entire song as earlier on

Modern recording techniques really give Tool an unfair advantage here.

You really think modern recording techniques have actually improved music that much?

Besides the fact that the performance, not the recording, is more important to me, I really think the Zep albums sound better than any Tool album I've ever heard.

I'm not so sure about that. For me it's that Tool's version sounds like it was lifted right off of Aenima (because it was recorded during the Aenima sessions) . It's a recording that was captured at the very apex of Tool's awesomeness and yes, it's better than the original.

It's great, but no way it's better.

You're dumb, too..... The apex of Tool's awesomeness was the first leg of the Lateralus tour. Aenima is no doubt their best album, though.

I think that Tool's version takes a good song, makes it more dynamic, more sinister, more powerful, and more purposeful. Its longer, but there is definitely a tone shift from the beginning to the end, whereas the zep version just kinda plods along with Plant howling. Its just my opinion, of course. Dumb? Definitely not.

Tool's version is more or less the same but with added distortion. And this isn't one of Maynard's better performances.
