From interviews I´ve heard that the guys are talking about Backspacer and this patterns, from what I understand, this so called "patterns" are musical textures, meaning that the songs are less riff driven, am I right??, but what I don´t understand is why they are talking about this patterns as if they were a new concept for them, I was listening to Avocado, and the disk is full of them, Parachutes, MITS, Army Reserve, etc. Am I missing something or did I undestand the "pattern" concept wrong"??

not really--they probably just highlighted that because a few of the nice cathartic moments on the record (like the end of force of nature) are 'patterns' where they would have been solos on records past
