CLUTCH RULES

1. You can't be clutch until after the 5th inning.
2. You can't be clutch if your team is up 3 or more runs (of course after the 5th inning), unless you're a pitcher and men are on base that you are not responsible for.
3. There are at least four degrees of clutchness -- CLUTCH, REALLY CLUTCH, ENORMOUSLY CLUTCH, CLUTCHEST EVER. These degrees are assigned based on considerations such as the closeness of the score, the inning of the game (later the better!), the count, the hit itself, and more.

GAME 1, ALDS, TWINS

First inning: comes up with two outs, Jeter on second. Goes down 0-2, battles back, lines out to rightfield. Verdict: choke.

Second inning: man on first, two outs, makes nice play on ball to his left, throws out runner at second, inning over. Verdict: near choke. He stumbled a bit; the play shouldn't have been as close as it was.

Third inning: ball hit right to A-Rod, he fields, makes nice throw to second, Cano turns double play. Verdict: big deal.

Fifth inning: first-pitch single, Jeter scores from second, Yanks up 4-2. Later scores on Matsui's two-run homer. Verdict: sort of clutch.

Seventh inning: after Tex grounds into double play, and with Jeter still on third, A-Rod waits on breaking ball, hits the rightfield wall on a fly. Long single, Jeter scores. Verdict: makes the score 7-2, so we're out of clutch territory.

GAME 1, ALDS, TWINS, FINAL: 7-2 YANKS WIN.

A-Rod: 2-4, 2 RBIs. Good, but not good enough to be impressive.

Tex isn't clutch, never has been. Plus he's not the best player in the history of the universe.
