I can get behind this thread. I love the sound on Chronic Town especially. These albums are perfect when played any time after 4:00pm between the months of October and February.

it's good fall music

R.E.M. has some great tunes and they deserve credit for wandering from their original folk-rock sound, but it was still their best. It sounds the most natural and Stipe's lyrics are better.

see, while i like some of their songs, over all i just cant get behind them. stand, orange crush, crushed with eye liner, whats the frequency kenneth and a few others are solid tunes to me, but i tend to shy away from the political bands out there, which i lump them into with u2, pj and ratm. not so much the songs are political (they are) but more of the preaching they do

that's why I like the early albums actually, the lyrics are more cryptic and obscure

some of Stipe's earnestness kind of gets to me later on

I also appreciate Stipe's more cryptic, at times bizarre, lyrics... but Automatic and Hi-Fi are such solid albums at every level. They win for me.

I'd extend it to Document. I've been listening a lot to Fables recently and have always loved Document and Pageant.

Those three are great. And then they raised the bar from there with Fables.

I'd have to go Green, Out of Time, Automatic.

or even Automatic, Monster, New Adventures. Nothing touches New Adventures for me.

automatic, monster, and Hi-Fi would probably be my 3 record run. Green and Out of Time have better songs than the best stuff on monster, but they're comparitvely inconsistent records.

But as i've said elsewhere the murmur to hi-fi run of records is probably the longest string of incredible albums any band has ever produced. If someone picked any 3 record stretch from there I'd take them seriously even if I didn't agree

I have to agree with stip on this one; Murmur through Hi-Fi is untouchable; any three album run in there could be in the running for a best all time run. That they did that not for 3 albums but 10 (and that's not including the stellar Chronic Town EP) is unparalleled.

Definitely prefer Lifes Rich Pageant to Chronic Town. Their IRS releases are far and away their greatest material.
