The back of the VHS case reads, "Based on the true story of America's forgotten heroes, "Glory" is one of the greatest war movies ever made."
Now, I write this feeling this is "Based on the true story, a forgotten film, "Glory" is one of the greatest war movies ever made."
Glory tells the story of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, the first black regiment in the United States Army during the Civil War. The group is lead by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) and is followed by numerous black characters, each of them inspirited and charismatic, like the inspirational leader Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and the tempermental and passionate Trip(Denzel Washington), for which Washington won his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor.
The film, by director Edward Zwick, never pussyfoots around the origins of black culture and feelings during the period. At one point Trip tells Colonel Shaw, "I still don't want to carry your flag," during a private questioning of what the future of America has in store for the blacks in America, even if the North does win. And one of the more emotional scenes in the film, the regiments spirited preparation before the dawns fatal battle, seen below:
Love this movie. Or I used to. Haven't seen it since college.
The music was incredible, and while it probably paints some of the people involved as more enlightened than they were/would have been, it really doesn't soften it up as much as one would expect. Gettysburg really made the battle scenes of this movie seem like tossed off mini-enactments with little drama or realism (the multicolored flashing lights and the strawbody that sails like 50 feet in the air during the storming of the fort always made me laugh), but it really is a great movie regardless.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie. Denzel is easily one of my favorite actors, and this is easily one of his best performances. An easy 5 stars from me. The ending is so damn sad it nearly brought me to tears the first time.
