I never use the second one. I feel like the intent of it is to laugh at somebody. I don't know why. The way that little yellow punk is laughing he just seems like such a jerk. The lol guy is laughing like "that was a funny joke." Haha guy is lauging like "omg you're so stupid! I am laughing so hard AT you!"

I propose that they can be effectively used together to signify the movement from a small to a belly-laugh, a gargantuan , as whatever the joke is becomes funnier and funnier the more you think about it. But this two-pronged approach should only be used in the most exceptional of cases.
