This is a tough call since both of these songs are very different (and very good)
Phil--I've listened to your song 3 times now and I haven't failed to smile each time. It reminds me of Weezer (who I don't like) and Weird Al Yankovich (who I do).
Iceage: that was a lovely, soothing song. Very gentle and heartfelt. Is this inspired by anyone in particular?
I went back and forth on this one. It's hard to compare these two. But I think the whispered 'more cowbell' build in phil's song just takes it. Great job Phil, since iceage has been in a few of these tournaments now, and I rarely vote against him
Vote to Philpritchard
Iceage--I do have one piece of constructive criticism. The last chorus fell a little flat. The whole song has a bit of a hypnotic monotone to it, but there are subtle inflections in your voice that make it compelling--in particular I like the way the flatness of the last lyric in the verses transitions to the slight raise in your voice at the start of the chorus. But after the second chorus the song is too much of a lullaby. It's peaceful, but too peaceful. I'm not saying you should be belting out the last verse, since that wouldn't fit. Perhaps just moving the vocals forward more in the mix (or the nice guitar part you have coloring the song underneath the piano towards the end), but the last minute of the song needs just a little something more. If it had that I think this would have gotten my vote. Phil's song is a joke song. A very well constructed one to be sure, but there are limits to how far that could take you. Your song lifts to a more powerful place, but as I said, it comes back down from it at the end, a gradual descent that felt less like the aftermath of a climax and more like a loss of momentum

I can't wait to get home and listen. I've been looking forward to this contest.

The Cowbell Song is brilliant but im giving my vote to Anne Marie.
It went down to the craft of the song and i think there is a bit more in Anne Marie. Both songs are very good but im not sure if it is because The Cowbell is a joke song but it just made me laugh whereas Anne Marie made me feel a bit more. Made me pay a bit more attention?! but that could just be my own taste?!

I'm in the library so can't listen to your entry yet Phil, but I'm really excited to hear it.
Stip, thanks for your criticism - I think you're definitely right and I'll bear it in mind. As for inspiration, did you mean musical? I guess Leonard Cohen...maybe a Tom Waits style ballad (obviously not in the voice though).
I'll do the classy thing and throw in a vote for myself
Edit: As a disclaimer of sorts...anything I put forward in this will have been recorded and produced on a broken, shitty 8 track recorder, so it's all going to sound pretty rough.

Nothing's funnier than a cowbell. Great musicianship on that one. It was tight and the guitar solo rips at the end.
Iceage's song reminds me of Starsailor. You sound like that singer a bit. Dunno if you'd consider that a compliment or not, but I thought it sounded good with the guitar, piano, and lyric.
Vote for Iceage.

I meant is it inspired by an actual person (the girl)

Oh, ha. Yeah it is, although the name is changed, but I think the notion is pretty universal...the most ideal thing that a person could be to their loved one is everything they'll ever need, I guess.

Tough call here. The songs are indeed very different. I listened to each once, and my initial impulse was to go for The Cowbell Song, as it was immediately pleasing, but I'm listening to Anne Marie right now for the fourth time. To say the least, I'm glad that this is not a single elimination tourney.

Definitely heard Weezer in The Cowbell Song by Joe Maximus, Phil. Really good song with some stellar guitar work, too.
Anne Marie is fantastic. I really like the layers of instruments and the vocals. The tremolo picked guitar in my left ear towards the end was a nice touch.

Oh how I hate it when these tournaments begin with such difficult first rounds... although I guess that means that we're having some very good entries, which should make us happy, right?... so yeah, I'll give my vote to iceage.
Phil's song was great, fun and very well-crafted musically but I was grabbed a bit more by the atmosphere in Mr. Coming's song. So yeah. Good thing there's a second chance bracket.
