He was tried in Virginia because supposedly this state has a willingness to execute killers, and this was a high-profile case.

He put this entire region on edge for three weeks. Imagine going into a grocery store and seeing people walking in zig-zags, like they were having seizures to avoid looking like easy targets. Or pulling up to a gas station and having to duck down between the pumps and cars for protection. In the wake of 9/11 it was an extremely tense time, going about your daily business having to worry that your head might be randomly blown off.

It sort of seems like he should have been given life, but it doesn't matter now. I'm just relieved that he's gone and that police detectives were able to catch him fairly quickly.

I was at the site of the Rockville, MD killing less than an hour beforehand. And yes, I was paranoid about getting gas and being on the lookout for a white van.
