But what are standards anymore? Can you have standards in a nation of nearly 300 million with such diversity in background, religion, and culture?

A-ha. This is where the divide begins.

Of course, we'd have to define how we felt about virtue first.

Which brings us back to #'s 1 and 2 ;)

I'm more of a virtues guy myself. Morals and values can be just about anything.

I thought it was worth bringing this "topic" up because of how easily people toss around "moral values" and like to use them to feel justified in their positions.

morality could be defined as the essence of the human socio-cultural evolution => a set of priciples, that allows our species to continue evolving.

morality - n.

1. a system of ideas used to justify one's actions while also used to condemn those that might offend them.
2. An abstract term that is used so subjectively that its former meaning is lost entirely.

To me, morality doing well for yourself while at the same time (in a best case scenario) doing good for others. In a loosest case scenario, it's doing good for yourself while not hurting others. It's a case of doing things designed to bring you peace and happiness and not interfere with the peace and happiness of others--or ideally--to increase peace and happiness for others.

Interesting, I don't think I've ever seen anyone define morality with "doing well for yourself" being any part of the definition.

This is simple and should be posted in classrooms and courthouses instead of the 10 commandments.
Do onto others as you would have them do onto you.

Yeah, but it's in EVERY religion because it is the greatest truth about human society.

Maybe the Christians stole this from the pagan religions where they got everything else. :P
