A bit o' interesting casting news:

http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=19705

Whoa! Thomas Hayden Church Vs. SPIDER-MAN!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a big big break in SPIDER-MAN 3 casting. Over at The Hollywood Reporter they've broken the announcement from Sony that Sam Raimi has cast Thomas Hayden Church as the villain for SPIDER-MAN 3!!!

The villain hasn't been announced yet, but I've heard some pretty strong whispers that it'll be Sandman, but I'm not 100% on that. I love the idea of casting Church now... it falls into the strong, non-star character actor casting of the previous Spidey flicks, but who could he be? He wouldn't make a bad Sandman if that's who's in the movie... Hobgoblin, perhaps? Remember, Hobgoblin wasn't Harry Osborne, Harry later went on to be the next Green Goblin... Surely they wouldn't go with something as cool as Kraven, would they? Mysterio? Doesn't seem like a good fit for Mysterio. What about Eddie Brock? The Venom rumors won't die, but Raimi has said many times that he's not a fan of Venom, so unless Avi is twisting his arm in order to get the huge Venom fanbase frothing at the mouth, then I'd rule that one out. What do you folks think?

-----------
A weird choice, but so was Alfred Molina, and I think Molina did pretty well as Doc Ock.

Sandman would be an interesting villian indeed. I think he'd translate better than some of the other Spidey Villians. CGI would be really cool on some of Sandman's abilities. Hmmm...

Church is the Spider-Man 3 Nemesis!
Source: Columbia Pictures March 22, 2005

Thomas Haden Church, who was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in "Sideways," has been cast as Spider-Man's new archenemy in the next chapter of the "Spider-Man" adventure, it was announced by director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.

Spider-Man 3, which is scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, will reunite the successful team that was responsible for the first two blockbuster films. The franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales and the new film will again reteam director Raimi, producers Ziskin and Arad, and actors Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as M.J..

Production on Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to begin early next year.

"In addition to the on-going relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," said Raimi. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with him."

The identity of the new villain is being kept secret and while speculation is rampant about which character is being called into action, the studio will not comment on the casting beyond confirming Church.

Since his star-making role in Spider-Man 3, Church has been in demand. The actor is voicing one of the characters in the upcoming animated film "Charlotte's Web," and he recently appeared in Columbia Pictures' "Spanglish". Church previously appeared in such other films as "George of the Jungle," "3000 Miles to Graceland," and "Tombstone". In 2003, he also starred in, co-wrote and directed the comedy "Rolling Kansas". From 1990 to 1995, Church played Lowell Mather in the TV series "Wings".

A lot of fans have high hopes that the villain in Spidey 3 will be Venom, a more modern foe for the wallcrawler than the first two films’ Green Goblin and Doc Ock. Of course, Raimi isn’t saying whether we’ll see the symbiote-suited Venom in the next film or not, but he does explain that the choice of villains also comes down to a balance between character and the cool visual aspect that modern special effects allow (and that would surely make for an amazing Venom, by the way).

“Absolutely we wanted to have a villain not only who would fulfill the character needs but somebody who could entertain the audience on a visceral level and provide great visuals, something we haven’t seen before, and create a real challenge and great foe for Spider-Man and his unique spidery, spider-like powers,” says Raimi.

Spider-Man 3 is currently targeted for a May 2007 release.

I would like Venom but I don't think it will happen.

I would have preferred Venom, but that is only because Venom is so awesome. I personally loathed Spiderman 2, and have low expectations for this one.

Willem Dafoe a "non-star" actor?

Interesting choice. Church is pretty good, but normally he is known for his comedy right? It should be interesting to see how he does in the role and what role that is.

The only villian Raimi has hinted at thus fas has been Venon. I believe this hint was provided at ComicCon. I also seem to remember that S3 would feature multiple enemies.

I think Mysterio would be an awful choice.

What about Lizard? After all, Dr. Connors was in the last movie.

My guess is Venom. I'd be surprised if there is a 4th movie, mainly because of the difficulties in paying a cast and crew etc., so I think they need to really take advantage of what they can do in the 3rd.

To me, that means using Venom, and I think Church would be good in the role. Though, judging by Sideways, he needs to hit the gym.

I have no doubt this will suck, and until we get an R-rated Spider-Man movie including Venom, they will keep on sucking.

I didn't write that.

Regardless, you consider Dafoe a "star" actor? I don't think so.

I hope Green Goblin comes back to life.

I consider Dafoe a "star" actor.

I vehemently disagree. He is certainly a great actor, but not a "star" actor.

Tom Cruise is a star actor. Tom Hanks is a star actor. Harrison Ford is a star actor. Willem Dafoe...not a star actor.

The first movie did suck, and I just didn't get how it was so popular, but the second movie kicked a lot of ass, and was probably the most fun movie I saw last year.

That's all over now...maybe. Kirsten Dunst, our resident OK-but-could-be-better Mary Jane Watson, has been out and about doing publicity for Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown and let it slip that Thomas Haden Church is playing THE SANDMAN and Topher Grace is playing VENOM. Harry will close the film with his first appearance as Hobgoblin.
