In the spirit of news and debate, I hope that everyone in this thread understands that if the pope declared war on reason, it would directly undermine the encyclical published by the previous pope in 1988 called Fides et Ratio (Faith and Reason).

That De Dora guy is a closed-minded atheist.

For the record, I don't consider myself a religious person nor do I feel any sort of spiritual presence in my life, but it still irks me how little most of the world really understands Catholicism. Silly, right? I imagine I'll always feel that way.

Not even most Catholics understand Catholicism, Reid.

I guess this is a good place to tell a story because it's been on my mind all day and has really bugged me. I've been at my parents' house over winter break, relaxing, reading, etc. Today we got a knock on the door and it was a gentleman and his two daughters making door to door rounds and telling people about God. My brother answered and I was eavesdropping from the living room. All the man wanted was to let his daughters read from the bible to my brother. He didn't have anything to sell or give away, and he didn't force anyone to accept Christ, etc. It was actually really nice. My brother told the girl that she read well, and everyone wished each other a happy new year.

Now, the family that lives next door to us are very close friends of ours, and also very Catholic. They mean well, but they give off a very holier than thou vibe sometimes. We let it go because they are such good friends, but it can get tiring. They came over for lunch later today and the conversation turned to the door to door people. The oldest daughter seemed disgusted by it, and her husband felt the need to make it clear that they didn't accept things from them but tried to offer them a rosary and a church bulletin in case they were interested in Catholicism. They gave off the impression that we were supposed to be impressed by that.

I was sort of disgusted after that story. That completely misses the point. I mean, all these door to door people wanted to do was spread the word of God, and nothing they said directly contradicted Catholicism, yet they were greeted with hostility. It really bothered me. Thanks for letting me vent, RM.

By not making a statement to the effect that they accept the supremacy of church tradition, they seriously offended Rome.

If they were to seriously offend Rome they'd have to not accept capital T Tradition. Yes, there is a difference between tradition and Tradition within the catechism.
