Binaural has some of the most beautifully mixed songs in the Pearl Jam catelog. Rival and Of The Girl come to mind.

We probably have different definitions of experimental, but I would say Of the Girl and Slight of Hand are two good examples of Pearl Jam 'departing from their traditional norms', and not sounding like Pearl Jam.
What do you think is not experimental about these songs?

While they are good songs.... They are just slow rock songs being played by a rock band to me. No new ground was discovered musically or vocally. In fact, Of The Girl always reminded me of a Neil Young homeage musically.
YMMV
When I think of experimental, I think of ground breaking, "dangerous", and new for the industry. I personally can not concievably see anything experimental about these songs.

You see, I've always considere4d the term "experimental" to be relative to the band that you're describing. Those songs aren't groundbreaking, but I would still call them experimental as far as Pearl Jam is concerned.

That's my take on it as well. I guess the songs could also be like "atmospheric / spacey rock" or something...Throw in: Help Help, Army Reserve, Unthought Known, and a few others and that could make for a cool mix.
