You know, I don't know what it was for years but I don't think I truly used the library system here in Sarasota for quite a while.

This past year I've used it quite liberally. And part of me feels marginally guilty because I've probably seen about 3 video rental stores in the area close, but I guess this is just modern times. I think video rentals (at least in a physical format) is just a loose concept. Now you have machines at groceries stores handling the rentals of newish releases. In terms of music, I still buy CDs, but not as much as I used to. There's pretty much only an FYE at the mall here that has a reasonable selection (mostly because of what is used.)

So now the library just seems to be the logical place to make discoveries. I've seen some relatively terrible movies (I saw that Crispin Glover/Keanu Reeves) and I've enjoyed films like Heathers. But it's the discovery that's excited me. And I love the flexibility of the library system. The fact that I can have anything ported to the library of my choice keeps me away from the smelly dudes and women downtown. What do you think?

If you think of the internet as a giant library, yeah I use the library a lot (for music, not movies)

Don't feel guilty. You're already paying to keep the library open with your taxes, you may as well use it.

Our library system here has a ton of movies and music. I definitely use it to supplement my Netflix, and I no longer have any use for cable.

I like owning my own copies--being able to write in them, read them whenever I want. Plus I'm a bit OCD so I don't have to worry about other people touching them or anything.

the wanting to read things multiple times is the only reason i'd want books, but i guess i could always read it at the library then buy it later if i really wanted. i don't like writing in books very much.

There's also the desire to have a huge fucking library so when I have people over to my house they can be like "wow, you read all of those?" and I can sip my espresso and say "No, some of them I read twice."

this

plus, I never find the exact books I want at the library

I haven't used one in probably 10 years to actually check out or read a book.

I very rarely write in them. I highlight a lot though, and mark pages with post-it notes.

I was using it a lot at the beginning of the summer. I have the same dilemma as Mick, and as a result just stopped going. Plus, a bought book has no return date.
