Seeing as this is one of the very few stations that is willing to play Pearl Jam in the UK, something must be done to save it. I know most readers here are US based but I believe you can still access the station
Basically, the BBC is maintained via a tax called the License Fee. Each household in the UK pays around £150 ($250) a year to use the BBC's services. In what is being stated as pretty much political pressure to save money, they are cutting the service (as well as the BBC Asian Network, which caters for British Asians which also really annoys me) and justifying it by saying that the money 'saved' will be reinvested in providing more news for foreign news...all paid for via the tax for householders of the UK. There is also a plan to cut half the online content on their website in 3 years. Content is free of adverts.
I think this is a tremendous loss, seeing as UK radio is very much dependant on the BBC to provide the majority of radio content in the UK. (The three most listened to radio stations in the country are BBC Radio 1 (which plays shit pop), Radio 2 (which is much akin to the Adult Contemporary bracket in the US and BBC radio 4 which is a news and current affairs channel primarily. BBC 6music is for alternative music. Although it only pulls around 600,000 listeners, whilst the other stations pull in the multiple millions, they are FM stations whereas this is digital and internet only. If this was available on FM, It would easily get multiple millions of listeners.
If any of you would be willing to spare some time please do so and add your names to the petitions.

I hope I don't get this thread too horribly off topic, but I haven't had a good reason to listen to the radio in years. Maybe the BBC differs from radio over here, but it just seems so pointless to me.

So it's only BBC radio 6 being cut? As in only the alternative rock music channel? Those have pretty much died out here in the states too. I think it's inevitable. There's a lot of other ways to listen to music now though. I haven't listened to the radio for more than an hour at a time in years.

We renegged on debts incurred during the French and Indian Wars, violently cast off the crown, and we still get to enjoy your taxpayer funded radio? Why doesn't everyone revolt?

I wouldn't say it's totally irrelevant. 600,000 listeners is 1% of the national population, which is pretty good going for a station you can only hear on the internet or with digital radio.
