I went to Jerusalem for a few days to visit my friend who became an orthodox Jew a few years ago, and now lives at an all-girls boarding school in Jerusalem where young girls live and study Judaism until they find a husband. Anyway, they have a lot of American girls, mostly straight out of high school, who come and live there for a few months to study and get in touch with their roots (in reality they spend most their days on the roof sunbathing and smoking weed, and party all night). Naturally I fell right in with that crowd.
So we were hanging out on the roof one night, running around, drinking and playing tag, listening to music on one of the girl’s laptop (a lot of Sean Kingston and Akon. I can tell them apart because they always say their names at the beginning of every god damn song), until at one point I suggested we play something from my cellphone. I was thinking maybe some Beatles or Radiohead, you know, something everybody can enjoy.
But my friend and I have a thing for Bugs. We’re always quoting it to each other on random occasions, so she told me to play it for the Americans. I was against it at first, since the girls said they know of Pearl Jam, but couldn’t name one song, and I felt bad about having Bugs be their first impression of the band, you know? But she convinced me and I played it. I wish so bad I could have filmed their reaction, omg. It could be the new 2 girls 1 cup. It was so surreal, standing on a roof on top of a mountain, with this view behind us:
about seven girls in long skirts huddled together around a cellphone making the greatest WTF EW!! Expressions I have ever seen, and cracking up.
"'tickle my nausea'? - what?!"
When it was finally over three of the girls just started shouting “PLAY IT AGAIN!! PLAY IT AGAIN!!!” I tried to get them to listen to some proper PJ songs, but they wouldn’t hear of it. I had to go away for about fifteen minutes, and when I came back they were still playing it! And singing along. The next day I saw them in the dorms and they were still randomly shouting “DO I EAT THEM? RAW OR WELL DONE?” etc. Apparently they are driving the other girls crazy singing this song all day. They asked me if the singer is on crack. One of them told me she had a nightmare about bugs crawling on her skin, it was inspired.
So if you ever feel like Bugs is just dumb/ should have never been on the album, just remember its amazing powers to freak out the unsuspecting public.
