never heard of it.
It is a French film starring Monica Bellucci. It has probably the most brutal rape scene, and the most brutal murder scene I have ever seen on film. A very well done movie. I can't say I enjoyed it because it is just so heartbraking and disturbing, but it is definetly a quality flick.

The first 30 minutes of the film has a background noise with a frequency of 28Hz (low frequency, almost inaudible), similar to the noise produced by an earthquake. In humans, it causes nausea, sickness and vertigo. It was the main cause of people walking out of the theaters during the first part of the film in places like Cannes and San Sebastian. In fact, it was added with the purpose of getting this reaction.
Wow
This film has somewhat affected me like films rarely do. I'd say its an accomplishment.

That's cunning.

The most eloquent post I've ever seen on IMDB. You punctuated! And those complete thoughts, oh boy..
Seriously though, very good post. It makes me want to see the film. After the meathead mp3 rape scene bullshit, it was refreshing to see a level-headed and composed post.

I sort of see where people get the whole exploitation-angle but I did not get that from this film. It was meant to be emotionally damaging and it succeeded. If it had to be as vulgar and disgusting as possible, well it worked. I don't think the rape scene and the scenes in the gay S&M club were put in just for the sake of pornography or exploitation.

after g_v starting this thread i headed over to IMBD discussions also. turnes out it was just a bunch of pissed off lesbians saying 'this is a mans film blah blah'. one dude even asked a question ending in "what do you guys think?" and some crazy bitch went off at him, "does that mean only males can ANSWER!? OH MY GAWD".
"whoa"

This director is amazing too. His name is Gaspar Noe and his previous film was called "I Stand Alone" which is about a pissed off older-gentleman ("the butcher" who fantasizes about killing people and sleeping with his daughter. It may be a bit on the boring side for some people but his character is pretty fascinating. I liked it. This is Noe's next project, from some poster at IMDB:
"His next project is tentetively titled Enter the Void, and he is currently working on it in Tokyo. It has something to do with a drug dealer, going insane, and the Tibetian Book of the Dead. That is really all that is known at this point. It is a very ambitious project that has been in the works since before Irreversible (in fact, that film was made only as a stop-gap project that could be done quickly while waiting for pre-production to start on this next project), and is said to contain extremely complicated camera setups. It is rumored to be in the tradition of David Cronenberg's Videodrome. Noe has said that he wants to create actual intoxication of his audiance with the film. To physically make them high. He has also inlisted the help of maverick Japanese auteur Takashi Miike (of Ichi the Killer and Audition infamy) to help with the project."
I'm really looking forward to this. This guy does great work with the camera. He tries a bit too hard to be controversial, but that's art.

Woah, that sounds like it's going to be totally insane.
