Does anyone think all the recent news about the pedophilia cover-up -- going all the way to the Pope -- will drive people away from the church, or further, from identifying as a Catholic? It seems the church should have a specific interest in keeping Americans in the fold because outside of the U.S., no other world superpower is so Catholic, and the church would be relying on Africa and South America to keep afloat. But their handling of the situation so far has been terrible, generally.

Only one of them could remotely fall under the term "superpower," and they're all very secular countries with a Catholic past.

The priest factory/college here in Ireland hasnt had a single applicant in three years. Soon all our priests will be from the African states, but if we're anything to go by, people of a certain age (50+) are dedicated to the church, while the total of the population under that age bracket are disenfranchised, disillusioned and sick and fuckin tired of the church and it's antics. And the Pope's supremely patronising,ill advised and pure fucking dumb letter to Irish Catholics about the clerical abuse of minors put a solid steel final nail in the coffin of that faith in this country.

I hope they burn for a long long time.

Right but as I said, they're also not particularly Catholic, so...

yeah. i wasn't addressing that part, although higher %s of those countries are Catholic than the US according to Wiki (90% of Italy, for instance), which does hit on cb's point about "identifying as Catholic," no matter how strictly they actually practice the religion.
