Covering up thousands of cases of pedophilia is certainly doing harm.

I'm trying so hard to make a joke, but seriously ... there's nothing funny here, people. Catholics should be demanding the head of the Pope on a stick.

Just cause some priests molested some kids doesn't mean every Catholic priest is a child molester. Also how do you know the pope molested anyone?

actually, the pope's biggest problem is that he didn't do anything.

With that logic Nixon didn't anything wrong because HE didn't break into Watergate, he just covered it up.

I have a couple of friends who are vehemently defending the pope and calling the stories inaccurate slander designed to smear the church and the pope.

If the faithful didn't fund the institutions, this would be easier.

yeah, especially so many of the "faithful" themselves. the institution has so much of a hold on so many of them that the faithful are in denial regarding the whole thing, and/or they think their sacred church and its sacred staff is not supposed to be held to humane standards of common decency.

I wish people would stop blaming the the Catholic Church when they have been clear this entire situation is the fault of the media, the Devil, homosexuality, and the Jews.

I'm not sure how that's relevant to what I said.

Faithful and faith are not synonomous.

Does anyone think all the recent news about the pedophilia cover-up -- going all the way to the Pope -- will drive people away from the church, or further, from identifying as a Catholic? It seems the church should have a specific interest in keeping Americans in the fold because outside of the U.S., no other world superpower is so Catholic, and the church would be relying on Africa and South America to keep afloat. But their handling of the situation so far has been terrible, generally.

What keeps a devout Catholic from leaving the Church is The Eucharist. That has never changed, and likely never will.

Exactly. That's why it's absolutely absurd that people are claiming that this will be the end of the church. It's been around for 2000 years. Let's be honest, a few rapes here and there aren't going to do anything to change that. To believers, it's more a spiritual institution than a material one, and while the material offenses are bad, to those not involved, they don't affect the spiritual truth that the church represents.

I do agree that something serious needs to be done within the Church to confront this pedophilia business. Perhaps let priests marry? That's the tip of the iceberg, though.
