Supergrass Break Up

The long-running Britpop group Supergrass is breaking up. In a statement, the band cites a "17-year itch" as its reason for disbanding. They write, "Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years. We still love each other but, cliché notwithstanding, musical differences have led to us moving on and of course we all wish each other well in the future." The band will play four farewell shows in June (listed below).

Supergrass first started racking up hype with the dizzy, madcap 1994 single "Caught by the Fuzz", and their debut album, the minor classic I Should Coco, never let up on the bratty punk energy that song established. Since then, the group has been a big part of the British rock landscape, playing near the top of festival bills for a decade and a half. They've released six studio albums, and according to NME, they were at work on another when the breakup announcement came.

Last year, founding members Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey teamed up with producer Nigel Godrich to form the group the HotRats, releasing the covers album Turn Ons.

NO!! :(

I just watched the Diamond Hoo Ha tour doc and Glange Fever last night, and recently pulled out some old bootlegs and went through their albums again.

Part of me hopes this is an April Fool's joke. They don't always seem to happen only on the first of the month anymore. The other part of me thinks that if this is true it was because of some tension between the others and Mick Quinn. While working on their new album Mick cited problems to which Danny replied "No, Mick. You're the problem."

Fuck, this sucks. They were a great great band, deserving of more attention than they ever got. In It For The Money was an incredible record.

At least there's the Hotrats project.

Kinda sad I only got to see them once, but at least that one time in 2000 was amazing.

I used to love this band but I think their recorded output really took a nosedive after the self-titled/"X-Ray" album. Nothing they did after that really seemed to hold my attention - I bought the albums but they never seemed to "stick" for whatever reason. The ideas and tunes just weren't quite as compelling.

I Should Coco > In It For The Money > Supergrass was an incredible run, better than many bands could ever hope for.

I can thank Pearl Jam for finding this band and it's sad to see it end.

LooP was my favorite. Guess I'll have to have another Supergrass run...

give road to rouen a listen. It's a very different record, but by far one of their most powerful ones overall.

This really blows, but since they have been silent for so long, I guess it explains a lot.

A band that truly got better with age, and one of my faves of all time. It makes me sad to think that I won't have any music of theirs to look forward to.

For whatever reason, I never listened to these guys, but a few years ago I picked up "Road To Rouen" and quite enjoy it. It definitely reminds me of some Kinks / Beatles stuff...How is there earlier stuff? I'm thinking of not only re-visiting RTR, but check out some of their other albums as well...

Their entire catalog is really really good. I'd get the first three records I Should Coco, In It For The Money, and Supergrass. Those are all fairly diverse.

Lose It - I Should Coco (1995)

Sofa (Of My Lethargy) - I Should Coco (1995)

Sitting Up Straight - I Should Coco (1995)

Richard III - In It For The Money (1997)

Hollow Little Reign - In It For The Money (1997)

Sun Hits The Sky - In It For The Money (1997)

Moving - Supergrass (1999)

Faraway - Supergrass (1999)

Awesome! Thanks for the vids y'all :) Oh, and thanks for killing about an hour of work time

I'm kinda liking the stuff off the self titled album best so far...I may have to go see if Amazon has a cheap used copy or something...

Also check out The Hotrats. Its Gaz and Danny's sideproject (no bass) of all covers, produced by Nigel Godrich. Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Sex Pistols, The Doors, The Kinks, etc. Its pretty good.

And there are a few proshot Supergrass DVDs up on Dime right now.

I'd agree with this.

I should give Road to Rouen another shot. I tried hard at the time but it just never really got under my skin.

You should. St. Petersburg is one of the best songs they've ever written.
