Divorce laws are in place to protect rights regarding property and are in place to protect the children. Not sure why things have to be much more complicated outside of that, but I can see the reason why Texas is "protecting the sanctity of divorce" as far as the law on the books in that state are concerned. Doesn't make it right, but the law is the law no matter how lame it might seem.

This case isn't without merit tho. I'm sure the laws on the books might either become more adjusted or more staunch because of this case. We can only wait and see. If they become more adjusted that's a win for the gay community.

It's too bad though that the couple is stuck with each other until they can figure out an alternative. That has to be terribly frustrating.

After having gone thru a divorce myself, I can honestly say I'll have a hard time signing a legally binding contract again. No matter if it's for an auto loan, or a marriage.

Aw baby, i'll always do right by you.

In Canada, after a year of living common-law you are stuck with the same split on assets and responsibilities as if you're married. Might as well just get married and get a swell party and vacation before the impending split.

Not sure what the common law time frame is here in the U.S. 7 years? I think.

Only 11 states plus District of Columbia will contract a common law marriage.

Yeah, the fact that you can just go down to your local town hall and get a marriage license pretty much makes common law marriages pointless.

Hey Dave, do you think this could be a possible trigger for what you predicted about five years ago?

Sort of. I don't think the current Supreme Court is going to rule the right way on this, but they could shock me.
