Anyone who's been into Pearl Jam for a long time will understand why this is significant.

I'd like to know why this is significant. Is it okay to ask?

Yeah, I didn't want to put my fandom on trial but I'm curious too.

I'm guessing because he's written some (sorta) complimentary but also quite scathing stuff about the band over the years.

Is there anyone who's been into Pearl Jam for more than 18 years that can fill me in on why this is significant?

He's one of the few nationally famous music critics out there at the moment. He consistently writes poor reviews of Pearl Jam shows and albums and someone will link to his reviews and everybody will go on about what an ass he is. I think it had something to do with Eddie turning down an interview request with him back in the 90's or something.

I mostly think he's a douche because of this:

The Black Keys We are are playing lollapaloolza this year check out what the amazing writer for the chicago sun times jim derogatis had to say "The Black Keys: Fans worship this two-man Ohio blues-rock band, but there are easily half a dozen two-person combos on the current scene doing this sort of thing just as good or better."

incorrect Jim. As usual...

I like Dero a lot. No, usually he doesn't have much postive criticism for PJ.

Yeah, it's odd: despite the fact that I don't agree with his views almost all of the time, I own two books of his writings (Milk It and that one about psychedelic rock).

While I think he's completely full of shit, he's at least full of shit in a thought-provoking way - even if thoughts just serve to solidify my own opinions and how they're wildly different to his.

It's a stand-alone topic, tangentially related to Pearl Jam. It can sink or stand on its own merits.
