Jerry Coyne, a professor in the department of ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago, notes, "True, there are religious scientists and Darwinian churchgoers. But this does not mean that faith and science are compatible, except in the trivial sense that both attitudes can be simultaneously embraced by a single human mind."

I don't quite understand how the two are that incompatible.

I think he means they may exist side by side, but they don't FIT together. A person may have things in life that he rules with his scientific mind, and others with his religious mind, but there will inevitably be conflict where they intersect.

They really aren't incompatible.

I agree and that's why the quote confuses me.

Why not just say "God gave us the ability to discover things about our universe and we should not waste his gift"? That quote, from a brilliant person, rings of an anti-organized religion bias. If he had said Catholicism or Whabbism was incompatible with science, I would be more apt to agree.

How are they compatible? Religion exists purely on the basis of faith. It requires no verification, no factual evidence, nothing. Science is predicated on fact. It must be supported by evidence and the scientific method. Apply the scientific method to the bible and let me know how compatible with reality it is.

Are we supposed to follow the religious fact...errrr...parable, that God created the universe 10,000 years ago and in that moment gave us the ability to discover that the universe is actually many billions of years old?

You are confusing religious dogma and "faith", that was my exact concern about the original quote.
