OHIOVILLE — An Industry man whacked another man in the head several times with a hatchet, but Thomas E. Cronin apparently got the worst of a fight that started when he showed up at a residence with the owner’s estranged wife.
Cronin, 51, of 109 Boyana Drive, Industry, was airlifted by medical helicopter after the fight that bloodied both combatants outside the Ohioville home of Dale L. Kitzmiller, 31, on May 7.
According to Ohioville police, the episode began around 3:30 a.m. when Cronin arrived at Kitzmiller’s home, 354 Smith’s Ferry Road, with Kitzmiller’s wife.
Police had charged Kitzmiller in March with assaulting his wife, Veronica, at their home. She subsequently applied for a protection-from-abuse order against her husband, but the temporary order was lifted on April 28 after she failed to appear for a hearing in Beaver County Court, according to court records.
“I will kill you … ,” Kitzmiller reportedly said when he confronted Cronin at his residence on May 7. “You know you are not to be on my property.”
The two began fighting, and Cronin struck Kitzmiller three to five times in the head with a small hatchet, according to a criminal complaint filed by Ohioville police.
Kitzmiller disarmed Cronin and punched him numerous times in the face and head, causing serious facial injuries, police reported.
Cronin was airlifted to an unidentified hospital and later admitted whacking Kitzmiller with the hatchet, according to police.
Kitzmiller suffered three cuts to his scalp that required staples to close. He was treated at Heritage Valley Beaver hospital and released.
Both men were charged with aggravated and simple assault and reckless endangerment. Cronin faces an additional charge of attempted homicide.
Both were lodged in the Beaver County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bond. Cronin was released Monday after posting bond. Several calls placed to his home on Tuesday were not answered.
Kitzmiller remained in jail on Tuesday.
The investigators, Ohioville police Officer Kenneth R. Michalik and Assistant Chief Mark A. Smilek, could not be reached Tuesday for additional information.

honestly, who the f carries around a hatchet?
There was a guy in my frat...a little off his rocker...who had a hatchet. Um yeah, I don't think that was the best idea for him to have that. Let's just say it ended up lodged in his door more than once.
