This thread might crash and burn, but I'll give it a try. My hope is that once we're done with the one I pose, someone else will ask another other, and so on. So here goes....

This is American Football. Team A leads Team B by a score of 24-23. It is the fourth quarter, and there are 15 seconds left. Team A has the ball, but is pinned at their own 1 yard line on fourth down after their running back fumbled the ball on the previous down. Team B has no timeouts left.

--If you are Team A, what do you do?
--If you are Team B, what do you do?

Team A's FKK'D!

Spoiler: show
--If you are Team A, what do you do? Slant pass to the middle of the field
--If you are Team B, what do you do? BLITZ

---
I don't know fuck, I have no idea about coaching. Team B is probably going to run a prevent defense, and we all know what that prevents, amirite?

Team A should punt it. Very quickly. Team B should hope for a block.

actually, thinking about it, more of a strong rush might benefit team B; make sure the punter gets it out quick, but try get a solid return as well; this way, you get a chance at a field goal hopefully within good range (assuming the punt goes 40 yds, you get a 5 yd return, that's a 53 yarder; not unmanageable for an NFL kicker).

4th and long. I'm not even sure if you can have 4th and inches at your own 1 yard line.

Is it a scrambling qb, is it a rookie punter?

Doesn't matter. You could have Michael Vick as your QB and Brian Moorman as your punter if you wanted.

id like more information

is the clock stopped at 15 or is it now running and you have to get the play off. i am assuming the clock is stopped but barring that heres my best guess

-the clock changes on possession.
-taking a safety is out of the question as you will now be down 1 and kicking. you could hope for an onside kick, but too many unknown variables (will you get the onside kick, will there be a procedure penalty, how many times outs do you have, etc...)
-punting could lead to a saftey just because there is not a lot of room to manuever

my solution would be free kick by the qb

you can't onside kick a safety kick. as in, it has to touch the other team for you to be able to get it; no 10 yard and dive on it.

The clock is indeed stopped at :15. Team A ran the clock down as far as they could.

I mean it's not going to be a decent PUNT. from the one yard line, shortened lineup for the punter, plus team B is going to have a strong punt rush.

I stand by my TEAM A is FKKD

Team B wins on a last second fg

I hope there actually was a play like this in the history of american football, that would be a great payoff to this thread.

thats why i said you could hope for it, doesnt mean youll get it :)

i was just posting things going through my head to look at

im sticking with the free kick by the qb, you figure they are going to send everyone at you hoping for a saftey or a quick stop to switch possession and stop the clock for one final play. your qb surprises them with a drop kick and they have noone back to cover it, thatll take you to the 30-40-50 yard line after the bounces and now they have at most time for one play

I don't know of any such play actually happening, but it could have. It would be awesome to see, though.
