So I've been trying to pass one for 4 days now. I had to have a minor surgery done to break the stone down to a size where it was even passable, and they shrunk it down from 1 centimeter to about 4 millimeters. 4 milimeters is still really big so I was warned that it could take a few days to pass. Today we begin day 4 (I had the procedure done on Thursday, and so while I was a little loopy on thursday from anesthesia, I was basically fine Friday and Saturday--the stone did not start to pass until sunday morning).

The pain, as was predicted, is pretty awful. It feels simultaneously like your kidney is going to expand until it bursts, like your spine is going to snap, and like your entire lower back is trapped in a vise that some jerk keeps squeezing even though you've asked them politely not to. Fortunately the pain killers I'm on work fairly well, provided I take the maximum dose. The problem is that they're on a 6 hour time table which looks like this:

First half hour after pain killer--still pain, but pain subsidies. You feel like you need to throw up a bit though
Next hour and a half--you're dizzy and, if not semi-conscious, pretty out of it
Next 2.5 hours--mentally you're there. Everything is a little fuzzy, but you can function (that's where I'm writing to you from)
Next hour--pain killers start wearing off, pain gradually comes trickling back
Last half hour before you can take the pain killers again. Pain + nausea--this part is no fun.

This schedule makes sleeping hard since I have trouble sleeping to begin with and I can't really sleep through the periods where the pills are wearing off

On the plus side this is a pretty kick ass diet if anyone is looking for one. the pain and pain killers do a pretty good job suppressing your appetite. The first day I threw up 5 times. Since then I just haven't been hungry (you drink so much water there's no room for food anyway). Since Sunday I have eaten the following

Small Plum x2 (these were excellent, btw)
Can of chicken soup x1
Glass of Apple Juice x2
Can of watered down coke x1
Handful of popcorn x 6 or 7

and while I've felt weak I haven't been hungry. I may try to eat a little more today.

So who else has done this?

i am not sure if mine passed or not or if it was just some random pain.

i have broken my finger and sprained my ankle to the point it actually turned black and swollen probably 3 or 4 times its normal size.

combine those pains together, multiply it times inifinity +1 and that would be about 1/10000000 of the pain i felt one morning.

it was a very hot and searing stab in my kidney that only happened as i turned to grab my bag while opening my front door. i actually dropped to one knee like i was bono and just like that, it was gone.

ive felt it twice since then (about two months or so ago) and the last was probably a month ago.

if i had to go through that on a daily basis per hour, id probably step in front of a train

I've never had kidney stones, but I've heard they're painful. That popcorn part of the diet sounds pretty good!

Be well, stip. :)

It may have passed. Apparently the nasty part is when it gets from the kidney to the bladder. All the other tubes on the way out are bigger

Getting a kidney stone is one of my biggest fears.

I had kidney stones in college at a pretty young age, which is a bit unusual.

I had been up all night with severe backpain (which was actually kidney pain) and I finally walked over to the health center, which transferred me to the hospital.

I actually am not sure when I passed the stones - it must have been when I was waiting to see a doctor in the waiting room - because by the time the doctor saw me I there were no stones remaining.

So, I pretty much went through the worst of it without any pain meds. Ugh, I think I survived because I was young at the time.

Bounced back real nice, though. Worst pain of my life...hope everything gets better soon.

stip, I had them once and it was shitty. The doctor actually told me to drink beer at dinner and then wait for it. Sure enough, I had two beers and within 2 hours the excruciating pain began and I had passed them. The unfortunate part was I had to piss through a strainer because the doc wanted to test the stones once passed. :shake:

yeah, the stones don't hurt when they move out of your body while pissing; they hurt when moving from the kidney to bladder.

This. And when they are done moving down that skinny little tube from kidney to bladder and the pain stops, the relief is wonderful.

I've had two bouts of kidney stones. My first round was when I was 23 and didn't know what was going on. It starts in your lower back but not too bad. I thought maybe I tweaked or pulled a muscle. But then the pain starting to get way more intense and focused. The other time was several years later and was actually less severe. Usually they get worse with age. Unfortunately given experiences of my father, uncle and older cousin I'm probably in for some more.
During the worst of it I alternated between sweats and shivers. From strip down to my underwear burning up to piling on blankets freezing almost instantly. I remember writhing on the floor of my room and again in the car on the way to the emergency room. Nausea the first time, not so much the second. My side hurts just remembering this.
Fortunately mine all passed within a couple days. Four days? I feel for you, get well soon my friend. But at least they don't hurt coming out.

thank god, no. I'm supposed to be doing research but I don't have any definitive obligations, which is good cuz when I'm not drugged out I just feel weak and cranky. I tried to eat my first real meal in 3 days a while ago and just threw it up

I've barely slept in 4 days too, so all this shit just piles on top of itself.
