There's an Indian place across town that serves a wide variety of dishes. My first trip there, one of the things I tried was the Chicken Vindaloo.

bart is correct.

Many people I know wonder why I enjoy "ruined" food (i.e., food that is somewhat, um, spicy -- dishes where "all you can taste is the heat" -- something I don't quite understand). Such dishes turn eating from a survival necessity to an event, a sensory joy.

I'm with you...I love hot as hell food; sensory job is a good description. When I go to the grocery store, I load up on Jalepenos, Habenaros, and other chili peppers (Hatch, New Mexico roasted chilis are amazing). I'm also a big fan of hot sauce, and lots of cayenne pepper.

I just found this recipe for vindaloo:

3 cups chopped onions
1 1/2 cups chopped seeded tomatoes (about 4 medium)
2 1/2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
1 large garlic clove, chopped
1 teaspoon minced peeled fresh ginger
1 teaspoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon garam masala*
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon (or more) cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
6 skinless boneless chicken thighs, cut into 1- to 1 1/2-inch pieces
1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 1/2 cups low-salt chicken broth or water

I'm gonna try it out, but replace the Vegetable Oil with Canola Oil, and use white meat instead of dark to make it a bit healthier.

100% of RMers who have posted about butter chicken have ended up with gall stones.

Yanks talking about foreign food as if they're an enlightened minority will never cease to make me smile.

"Dudes, I just had something tangy. It wasn't even microwaved. Like far out!"

So, in the FOOD AND DINING forum, we are only allowed to talk about hamburgers?

Forgive us, all high and mighty "non-American" for liking a food and discussing it.

Sounds like someone's got a major case of paneer envy.
